“Pleasant short hike in the cold”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

We cam to Lone Elk Park on a frosty November morning. There were numerous trails through the picturesque landscape and we went on a two mile hike. The choices ranged from 400 yards through to many miles.

We were the only one in the park when we first arrived and we startled a few deer (maybe elk) when we first started walking.

After our hike we continued around the park in our car and it was great to see the bison. The young baby bison was a joy to see and we made sure we stayed in our car and kept plenty of distance from his wary mother.

As it was a Sunday or early in the day, the bird sanctuary was closed.

“Free, fun and easy to get to”
Reviewed December 24, 2013

Driving through a herd of buffalo or elk is usually reserved for tript to Yellowstone, but you can do it right here in St Louis. From St Louis take I44 west to highway 141, go west on the north access road to the park entrance. The park has two sections - both free. The first is like a normal park, get out of your car, picnic, enjoy. The second is a drive-through in the animal section. You go through a gate - do NOT get out of your car - and wind your way through looking at buffalo and elk up close. Depending on the day, you may see many, many animals or just a few in the distance. Always fun, enjoy!

“GREAT!”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

Great place to take the family and see some elk and buffalo close up. You can simply drive through and see the animals hanging out. We usually catch a baby of some kind. It's really a fun day trip for the kids...and adults!
