Lone Elk is a must-see for out-of-town visitors and a guaranteed winner with our grandkids. Shoot---my husband and I go there all the time without the grandkids. The park is beautiful in every season, and we seldom drive through without an exciting photo op. At times we have gotten up close (and nearly personal) with the buffalo----once we were actually surrounded by the herd which was WAY more fun and exciting than any amusement park ride. I've taken many of my students to the park---the lake is FULL of turtles----there are geese and ducks, bison and elk and of course white-tail deer. The best part is this wonderful park is free---although we happily contribute generously each and every time we visit to show our appreciation.

I don't usually review nat'l parks because they're ALL spectacular.

And while this is a State Park, I'm so surprised it doesn't have more reviews. Its a treasure. We just stumbled upon it & so glad we did. If you like wildlife, you must see this!

We've seen lots of wildlife - bison, moose, elk, bears - in the major national parks like yellowstone, glacier, banff, jasper. While not the magnitude of a nat'l park, the wildlife we saw here did remind us those wonderful nat'l parks.

As we exited I44 to go to our motel (hampton inn) we noticed the sign for this state park, just 2 miles away. After dinner we drove to see what it was all about and are we glad we did! It was around 715ish, dusk, and we saw amazing wildlife.

Its mostly a one-way paved drive through a quiet, deeply wooded park. wth a few clearings, and a large lake. It was a quiet, serene night and only saw a few other cars.

In the lake we saw two huge elk cooling off. SO cool. We then saw a small herd of bison including a few babies. There are signs instructing not to leave your vehicle, but there was no need - you could see them up close and personal. Amazing. Next we saw a few more massive, and i mean massive sized elk right next to us! And then we saw an adorable family of five racoons!

There's no admission fee but a little box to place donataions, and donate we did. This park is a treasure and st louis is lucky to have it. I'm surprised this is so low on the attractions list?
It will definitely be at the top of our list the next time we're in st. louis! If you like wildlife, you must see it. Go at dusk when they animals are most likely out.

On a cold winter day, it's always fun to drive out to the park and see what wildlife wanders by.

Interesting history. We met a friend for a picnic lunch before driving through to see the animals. Not many out and about, but I will return.
