Crushed Red is located in what used to be an artist's supply store. Parking for about a dozen cars in the rear with additional lot and street parking nearby. The restaurant is casual and works on the sustainability theme. The menu is soups, salads and pizza (actually more of a pizzette (there are some really creative and tasty options readily available and be prepared to taste fresh herbs, veggies and more...or make your own). You order your meal at the beginning of the line and beverages at the end where you pay. An OK selection of beer and wine is available. Soda and Iced tea are self-serve, alcohol is brought to your table as is your meal. A long line can develop at luchtime but don't let it scare you away. The restaurant does not take an inside order unless there are seats available. Most (not all) patrons have picked up on this concept and do not linger when finished with their meal. Since this is almost a cafeteria format, don't expect to have wait staff swarming all over you. They are friendly and timely in delivering food/beverages to your table. The price is reasonable and the portions are ample...splitting a salad and a pizza on date night will leave both parties satisfied but not stuffed. There are NO dessert options...WHY?...Surely there must be a dessert that fits the "sustainable" theme. I have been to this reataurant about a dozen times in the last four months for quick business lunches as well as late evening dining after a play or movie. There is no change in the way they operate or the menu options. For me, it is one of the best options in Clayton...no yuppies, just folks who enjoy a tasty fare and aren't hung up on "the scene"...or being seen.

We were walk-ins on the evening after Christmas about 8 pm. Full but not over crowded. We found a table for the 5 of us very easily. We ordered on line. The chopped salad is one of their specialities and it was great! All in all a nice, well priced casual place with good food. The service staff were so so, I felt like they did not want to interact, fine. Ambiance is fun. The place is somewhat noisy but fine for kids and a drop in. I would definitely go again and again. Very good fall back place.

First visit to Crushed Red and the place is crowded. I elected to let my companions order our food while I rested my feet. It seems the ordering process is somewhat complicated as those in front of my companions seemed to have difficulty navigating the menu. A previous reviewers description of Crushed Red as a Workaraunt seems to be correct. Luckily I did not have to navigate any of this otherwise it may have knocked a star off the review. The salads and pizza were very good and reasonably priced. The experience once the food hit our table was excellent. I'll have to try CR again and go through the ordering process first hand.

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. Before you go, understand what kind of a place this is. It is located in Clayton, a St Louis County city known for its varied and often excellent restaurants. This place is a "workaurant"-you get on line to order your food. There are lots of rules. You do not get your table until after you order your food (and the place is crowded). You do NOT move tables for your party, as we were rudely told. The place is not designed to accomodate large parties (we had 6 people). My elderly mother-in-law had to sit in an elevated chair, as the only available table for 6 had elevated chairs. There is one rest room for each gender, and each rest room accomodates only one person (again, the place is crowded). The ordering system is complex. You order your pizza in one place, your salad in another, your drinks in a third, and they reconcile your bill at the end. When you are trying to pay, you may well have your hands occupied holding your salad, and no easy place to put it down. Your pizza comes when you are seated at your table, if they get the order right. So, why not one star? Well, the food is fairly priced, and it does taste good. They make your salad in front of you-somewhat entertaining. The "pizzas" taste good. However, I would describe them as flatbreads rather than pizza. No tomato sauce on most of the standard pizzas they offer. Who would like this place? A young couple in somewhat of a hurry, people looking for a good value in Clayton. This place would likely be good on a day where there are no crowds. Not a place for large groups, not romantic!
