Hartford is the kind of coffee shop that every neighborhood wishes it had. In some ways it's familiar -- there's monthly exhibits of local art on the walls, a big bulletin board for sharing announcements, and plenty of small tables for studying or meeting with friends. In other ways it's exceptional -- they roast their own coffee and sell it by the pound at fair prices, they actually encourage people to hang out with their laptops by providing plenty of outlets and extension cables (and wifi), and they have a pretty complete menu of meals and snacks. It's also a very kid-friendly place: there's a little kids' corner in the back, somewhat separated from the main floor so parents can easily keep an eye while their kids play. If the kids' noise bothers you, or you don't like the live music on some nights, there's an entire separate building through the back patio where people are encouraged to be quiet.
I wholeheartedly recommend the chocolate chip cookies. Most of the food items are pretty tasty, and definitely worth the prices. Portions are fair but not overwhelming. You can also order a 'breakfast bowl,' which is a special but they can usually make it at any time. It has potatoes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese all mixed together in a bowl with a side of toast and butter, for around $5. It's the best way to start your day!
