On Father's Day, we took my father to see the Cary Hoffman and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Frank Sinatra is Cary Hoffman's idol, and Cary took us through his own life experiences - experiences that were influenced by Frank Sinatra. The performance was fantastic. My father was thrilled with the entire performance and expressed that he would love to see it again!. The St. Louis Symphony played flawlessly as they helped Cary through his trip down memory lane with Frank. The orchestra made this experience a day to remember for my dad! I would recommend the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra to everyone who has a love for music!
My wife and I have been going to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for almost 50 years. They have many varied and wonderful programs so the choices are numerous and will satisfy any symphonic music taste. They also regularly have top quality soloists from all over the world. There are many solo performances on violin, piano, cello, and many other instruments that are still in my memory in a delightful way. They also present many excellent vocalists in choral groups as well as soloists. Piano soloists tend to be my favorite and I have been simply amazed at what these talented soloists can do with a piano and the sounds they can bring forth. I have often left the symphony humming themes and carrying my delight out into the street.
It is claimed that the best seats for sound are in the balcony and in many ways that is true. However, I really enjoy the closeness of watching all of the musicians down on the main floor about 10 to 15 rows from the front of the stage. That way you can see the seemingly impossible ability of these talented people bring such delightful sounds from their instruments and to watch the conductors bring all of that talent together for a memorable evening.
Symphony Hall is the former St. Louis Theater but remade (many years ago) into the home of the Symphony. It is simply gorgeous and the perfect place for sound. It is elegant, comfortable, sound-perfect and a place where you feel elegant. The seats are covered in red velvet and most of the walls are painted white with gold trim. There are huge crystal chandeliers in the lobby that simply sparkle with light.
During intermission and before the performance, there are open bars serving all kinds of drinks and wine. However, intermissions tend to be short and don't give me enough time to savor a drink so I prefer to wait until after the performance.
Whether visiting for the first time or simply going many times to the symphony, it is truly a joy to watch, listen, enjoy and something that should not be missed.
Our entire family came here for a Christmas Performance and we enjoyed every second. It's not normal that teenagers are taken to a symphony with their parents and can genuinely say they enjoyed the entire performance! The theatre itself is also gorgeous!
St. Louis is very fortunate to have such a talented and accessible symphony at its disposal! I haven't been in a while, yet have always enjoyed myself, even though classical isn't what I listen to on my iPod!
Powell Symphony Hall is absolutely gorgeous and the acoustics are very good. If you haven't been in a while, or classical isn't your go-to music style, go anyway! It's a great experience.
The soloists were fantastic, the conductor is enthusiastic, and the theatre is sublime. It was a great experience.
how lucky are we to have one of the best orchestras, conductors, chorus conductors--all within easy geographical reach and affordability
a must for locals and visitors alike
