Owner description: The Missouri Civil War Museum is housed in the old 1905 Jefferson Barracks Post Exchange (PX) and Gymnasium building, formerly part of the Jefferson Barracks military post, which is still an active military installation to this day. Renovations began in 2003, and were completed 10 years later in 2013, with an opening date of June 29, 2013. During the Civil War, the property which this museum is located upon, contained various hospital ward buildings, where suffering and death occurred, thus making this sacred ground, and a most appropriate location for a Missouri Civil War Museum, honoring our soldiers of the past and present.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Wheelchair access, Stairs / elevator

What a wonderful surprise!!!! Very well done....You'll learn many things about not just Missouri but also Kansas during the Civil War. Kudos to those history buffs who spent the 10 years getting it up and running......

This museum is located in an old abondoned PX building on the grounds of the historic Jefferson Barracks in south St. Louis County. It has been the project of a number of local history enthusiasts for over 10 years. It has been completely remodeled and turned into a hidden gem in the St. Lous area. I expected a few moderste displays of Civil War era guns, uniforms and other usual trinkets. I was pleasantly surprised. The remodel and displays are first rate and very well displayed. The theme is to emphasize the role of Missouri in the Civil War. It starts with the era prior to the war and then the war years themselves, and then Reconstruction. The only thing I would have liked to have seen was more details of the battles/skirmishes that actually took place in Missouri. Give me more information on the Battle at Pilot Knob, the Battle of Lexington, etc. Will definitely return.

My mom and I visited this museum and we loved it. The gallery was so well done! We learned so much and it was a perfect Memorial Day activity.

They have completely renovated this grand old building and it is chuck full of artifacts, books, exhibits, etc. on the Civil War. I plan to keep tabs on the renovation and will go again when it opens.
