We visit this every time we are in St Louis. It is so beautiful. Even our 5 year old granddaughter was amazed at the mosaics & all of the gold. Wonderful craftsmanship. Take a guided tour, to learn about the making of the tiles, how long it took to build, etc. You will be glad you did.

This Cathedral is awesome. Our family of four, 16, 17 yo boys, wife & I spent a good hour walking around this house of worship. This is a spiritual place, that is open to all. The beauty of the interior is not to be missed.

In the vestibule, mosaics depict the life of St. Louis, who founded the Sorbonne in Paris. Since the city was named for Louis XVI whose patron saint was St. Louis, it was fitting if redundant. The mosaics are simply incredible. It is one of the largest collections in the world, originally created by Paul Heuduck and his son Arno, and completed by eighteen different artists after their deaths. The installation covers 83,000 square feet and contains 41.5 million pieces of glass using over 7,000 colors. It was begun in 1912 and completed in 1988. As the artists worked, they set the tiles in 12-inch squares and worked from the master plan to indicate what had been completed.
Pope John Paul II designated the cathedral a basilica in 1997.
