Do not miss visiting this cathedral. The detailed work on the inside is amazing and you will be astonished at every turn. We just quietly walked around and enjoyed the experience. Amazing church and amazing craftsmanship.

In the vestibule, mosaics depict the life of St. Louis, who founded the Sorbonne in Paris. Since the city was named for Louis XVI whose patron saint was St. Louis, it was fitting if redundant. The mosaics are simply incredible. It is one of the largest collections in the world, originally created by Paul Heuduck and his son Arno, and completed by eighteen different artists after their deaths. The installation covers 83,000 square feet and contains 41.5 million pieces of glass using over 7,000 colors. It was begun in 1912 and completed in 1988. As the artists worked, they set the tiles in 12-inch squares and worked from the master plan to indicate what had been completed.
Pope John Paul II designated the cathedral a basilica in 1997.

Absolutely incredible. I used to live 2 blocks away and the awe-factor never disappeared. On a recent visit, we went for mass, and stayed after to explore all the artwork and architecture. I'm pretty sure the Archdiocese keeps the building open most of the time so that people can look around and pray. You can also take guided tours: http://cathedralstl.org/parish/about-us/hours-of-operation/
