Napoleon's Retreat is a wonderful place to stay when driving through St Louis! It is easy to get to from I-44 and not far from the Missouri Botanical Gardens, which is a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon. The personal touch was greatly appreciated, and the recommendations for a dinner place and (very) early morning coffee were perfect. Breakfast was delicious and the table was exquisite, and we could not have been more pleased with our room, which was decorated in an elegant style that anyone would feel comfortable in. The beautiful dogwood tree blooming next to our door was an added bonus!

Room Tip: We chose the first floor room because I have difficulty with steps, but found there were still sever...

I loved staying at Napoleons Retreat. Not only was the area beautiful and very safe (solo woman traveller) but my hostess was fantastic and breakfast amazing. A beautiful old "painted lady" lovingly restored with all amenities needed for their guests. I would highly recommend this property.

Room Tip: I had the front room on first floor and it was huge and I loved the view from the windows.

The Lafayette area of Saint Louis has such grand history and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in St. Louis. There were times in the past where this area was almost destroyed, first by a tornado, then by hard times. However, the caring people that realize the significance of the area's history have been restoring the french style homes in the area to where now almost all of the homes have been restored. Napoleon's Retreat is an example of restoration. I felt almost transported back in time. The home is beautifully restored and the hostess, Stacy, was welcoming, very helpful and very accomodating. The breakfast which she prepared was delicious and one of the best I received at a B&B. I loved my room. It was spacious and comfortable. There are a lot of good places within walking distance that make good points of interest for exploration. Great restaurants and Soulard Market and the Soulard area is also within walking distance for some. Ask about the secret wine bar in the neighborhood. I would recommend this to anyone and if I ever come through St. Louis again, would love to stay here again.

Napoleon's Retreat is a quaint, charming home with several smaller rooms and out-buildings that have separate entrances from the main house. The young woman who was our hostess tried really hard to appear welcoming and accommodating. It was pretty clear that she was stressed from this new experience of running a B&B by herself. When something happened outside of her design, she responded harshly to one of the guests and wrote a snide note to another. The previous owners had established a pretty good reputation and hopefully the new owner will get her act together also. An outside cook is brought in to prepare the morning meals for guests which calmed the hostess a bit. The meals were very good and filling. The home is surrounded by a neighborhood of old homes and small restaurants. Parking on the street is a bit of a hassle -- not enough spaces for guest cars and the bird droppings from trees in front of the home are unbelievably bad.

Room Tip: Don't order an outside room if you cannot carry your own bags up steep flight of stairs.

We are so sorry that we failed to meet the service expectations of this guest. It is so important to us to ensure that each and every guest has a wonderful experience. When the guest removed a personal item from our private area in the inn without permission, we left a note requesting that the guest respect our belongings. We do not have an outside cook – a friend came by one morning to share a recipe. Stacy has always personally prepared breakfast. The other 2 mornings during their stay, Stacy was alone in the kitchen. Perhaps after a year it becomes difficult to recall the details of one’s stay. Regretfully these guests left disappointed. We are truly sorry.

We would like to note that this guest stayed with us in May 2012, not June. Additionally, they stayed in an outer room on the first floor. Their travel companions were upgraded to an adjacent outer room that has stairs. Regrettably, it was not mentioned to us that they felt the stairs were difficult to navigate. If we had known, we would have moved them to the less expensive room they had originally reserved in the main house, which was not near their friends.

Beautifully restored victorian home in the quiet serene Lafayette Square neighborhood. Small town atmosphere within the metro St Louis. Nicely appointed restored victorian home gives way to a quiet get away. Breakfasts were served in the lovely dining room just off the parlor room. We stayed in the Napoleon room on the third floor which is the entire third floor. The room was very comfortable. Just a note: if stairs are a problem, you may want to consider the second floor instead. Also, the heat was a bit tricky since the thermostat was on the second floor that controlled both the second and third floors. The hot water also was a bit slow in making it way to the third floor. Everything else about the stay was absolutely lovely. We loved Stacy and her two dogs Peanut and Indiana. They were so enjoyable.

Room Tip: If stairs are a problem, consider the second floor or their cottages. Also, the thermostat controll...

We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay! It was our pleasure having Julia and you as our guests. Peanut and Indiana especially enjoyed all of the wonderful attention they received during your visit. :o) Thank you for the feedback on the uneven heating. We are installing dampers in the ductwork to correct the imbalance between the 2nd & 3rd floors.

Thank you for celebrating Valentine's Day at Napoleon's Retreat! We're honored by your kind words; recommendations are the utmost compliment. It's wonderful that you were able to make reservations at several of the restaurants just 2 blocks from our inn. We're also happy we could help you find 33 Wine Bar, the well-kept secret on Park Avenue behind our inn. We hope to see you again soon!

The inn is picturesque with wonderful architecture and owners who go out of their way to make you feel at home and happy. We frequent b&bs across several continents, and have yet to have an experience come close to the quality and service here. The breakfasts are gourmet and the area is absolutely perfect- close location to excellent restaurants, parks, and even a brewery. Definitely will be staying again, in fact we already booked!
