“Grand Hotel and Perfect Location”
Reviewed April 7, 2010

This hotel was fabulous. Great value for the money and tons of amenities.
Large and fully equipped gym, nice spa, 3 nice restaurants, 4-screen movie theater, and right in the middle of the Central West End.
Stay here rather than downtown, The CWE is full of independent restaurants, shops, pubs, and charming to walk around. Forest Park is right across the street. If you do want to head to the Arch or whatever downtown, it is a 15 min drive.
We had a problem with the safe and they were there within 10 min.
A previous traveler mentioned that the bar was too loud and could hear music 6 flrs away. That is simply NOT true. We were closer than that, heard nothing, and even outside of that bar music was hardly heard anywhere past the lobby.
Stay here...it is fantastic!

As I write this review at 12:45 a.m. in the morning, the lamps, glass table tops, and windows in my suite are all vibrating and shaking to the pounding bass beat of the live band playing in the Lobby Bistro Cafe 6 floors away. When I came through the lobby itself a couple of hours ago, that same music and noise in the lobby itself was absolutely deafening -- there is no doubt it was WAY over OSHA safety limits. (And I am a professional musician, so I know something about noise.) There is something terribly wrong with a hotel when the music from a lobby cafe is clearly audible and keeps hotel guests awake from 6 floors under. When I called the front desk to complain, first of all the front desk clerk could not even hear me because of the music. (The lobby bistro cafe is near to the front desk.) He then told me that the music would probably stop sometime after 1 a.m., but they would not be able to turn it down before then. He then told me that he had had numerous other complaints from guests about the music. (And I know for a fact that other guests on my floor were been disturbed by the incredible volume of the music, because I met them in my corridor as they were also looking out to see what was going on.) The desk clerk then told me he could move me to a higher floor. (At 1 a.m.???) What kind of skewed priorities does this hotel have when it sacrifices the sleep, peace, and quiet of its hotel guests so it can operate an ear-splitting live music venue in the lobby that shakes the entire building? And this seems to be the root of the problem with the Chase Park Plaza -- it puts many, many other things ahead of the service and priority of actually being a world-class hotel. For example, upon arrival at this hotel the day before, with a lot of luggage, we just stood outside in the cold at 5 p.m., struggling with our numerous bags, while staff from the front desk looked on from inside. No bellman, no assistance, no nothing. When we finally got to the desk, they could not find my reservation, even though it had been made for many, many weeks. The admittedly gorgeous lobby (in addition to the deafening music at night) reeks of the smell of buttered movie popcorn, because they also operate a multi-plex movie theatre in the lobby. No smell of flowers in this hotel lobby, as you find at a Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons. It's definitely Orval Redenbocker, rather than Star Gazer Lillies. And beware if you decide to take a walk around the beautiful neighborhoods which surround this hotel . . . because if you make a wrong turn and happen not to notice one of the "no trespassing" signs along the turns into the grand old streets of Westmoreland or Westminster, rent-a-cops will threaten you with arrest, and call you rude names. The Chase Park Plaza COULD be a truly first class hotel if they put the business of being a hotel first. There is much to recommend about the rooms and appointments, and the concierge staff is first class. But in terms of the rest of the hotel staff, it seems that actually running a hotel, and offering a peaceful and welcoming retreat for HOTEL GUESTS, is pretty far down on their list of priorities. And so my recommendation, when staying in St. Louis, is to go to the Ritz Carlton.

My husband and I spent Saturday night at the Chase Park Plaza while in town to see White Christmas. We really enjoyed the hotel - especially the location. It is a very pretty older hotel that has been kept up and been updated as needed. While we did enjoy it, I must say our room was quite small. It was decorated very nicely, but not much room to move around (especially given the price of $159). The bathroom was pretty roomy - having a large seperate shower from the tub, but was very awkward. The door swung open onto the sink area. We would probably stay here again if the price was right because of the great location to the Central West End neighborhood within walking distance.

The Hotel was everything that you can expect I had a two suite that was well appointed and very very clean. The location could not be better walking distance to all kinds of food even a neighborhood grocery. Just steps away from the transit system for a quick ride to the ballgame or zoo.

I stayed at the Chase Park Plaza for three nights recently on business in St Louis. The hotel is impressive: well-maintained and high quality, with a terrific urban park across the street. Staff were professional. The lower level exercise facility is the best gym I have seen at a hotel, ever, and better equipped than most high-end university gyms. Minor things could be improved... the bathroom, although large and well-appointed, had an aggressive mold colony growing in the tub caulk, and the toilet seat was the cheap, thin plastic variety. The free newspaper was USA Today -- hello, am I at the Motel 6? Oh, and skip their pricey restaurants, as several good choices exist a block north and east.

We were there for the wedding for a friend's daughter and the venue was well-suited in size for hosting the number of guests. It was a little bit déjà vu as the particular rooms where the ceremony and reception were (the Empire room and roof lounge) also frequently host corporate and charity events we have attended, but was a nice alternative (and I am sure competitively priced) to the couple's original venue choice which had become unavailable. The staff handles many events and so the evening went well and we had a fine time. The rooms, and here I have to agree with some commentaries, can show their age despite renovation efforts. Typically we prefer to attend events and return home ourselves, but felt obligated in this instance to stay over. There were some issues with foul oder in the room and plumbing but nothing surprising perhaps given the aging hotel. Non-local visitors should be aware that there are often weddings and events in the hotel, which is the case of any large hotel of course, but the rooms and corridors tend to be quiet unless children are allowed and then things can get a little unruly. Unlike event-focused staff, the hotel-focused staff can be indifferent at best, so as long as your expectations are reasonable you should not be disappointed. In short, I recommend this hotel for large events when more intimate or personal settings are not possible for budgetary or other reasons, but would recommend considering not staying over if it is possible.

As booked for a business meeting, had done no research & was surprised when I walked into a very large suite. The staff was accomodating. I arrived at 8am & was able to check in by 10am - spending a couple hours in the comfortable lobby until someone brought a key over to me & apologized for the wait. My room was lovely & comfortable. I don't know St. Louis area too well - but, liked the neighborhood - good restaurants/cafes within a couple blocks. Fitness room opened at 5:30 am & was nice size for a hotel. I thought prices were reasonable.
