We stayed here with friends the first weekend in June, to visit the amazing Missouri Botanical Garden Lantern Festival show (which runs til Aug. 19). Although this location is away from downtown in the Central West End neighborhood, it is very well located to visit the Garden, only a mile or two away. It is also close to "The Hill" which is the Italian neighborhood, with lots of Italian restaurants. The CWE neighborhood is very pleasant, with big old houses, big trees, and areas of good restaurants and shops within walking distance from the hotel. It is across a busy street from a very large park (w/zoo, concert hall, museum, etc.) called Forest Park. So there are many opportunities to stroll, walk, run, etc.
The hotel itself is huge, with swimming pool, outside terrace seating for the pool & hotel bar, at least 3 movie theaters, and the usual hotel ballrooms, conference rooms & restaurants (can't review those as we ate elsewhere). We qualified for government rates, which were significantly less than the pretty steep rack rates, so it pays to look to see if you qualify for discounts.
Service at the desk was prompt and cheerful, and valet parkers were good. Our room, 324, was the last "park view" room, but being on the 3rd floor, looked over a roof top with air handlers, etc. No matter, since we were on our way to the Botanical Garden for greenery anyway. One problem with our room, and also our friends' room, was that retrofitting an old-fashioned size room with a king bed AND about a 4' high big honking credenza/armoire made the passageway between the foot of the bed and the credenza very narrow, with a sharp corner just waiting to catch you in the middle of the night. On the other hand, our bathroom was a generous size, updated and well equipped. It was very quiet and the bed was comfortable.
One strange incident was that at 12:30 at night, two maintenance persons came down the hall, talking loudly and with their walkie-talkie squawking very loud for some minutes -- it would have awakened me if I had been asleep. I can't imagine that is a good policy for a hotel. However, that was the only negative incident.
We would stay there again if in St. Louis.
