We found the Old Courthouse to be very interesting inside, with lots of information regarding the historical significance. Inside the various rooms and wings of the Old Courthouse you will find various historical museum displays, which are very informative. Our kids 14 and 11 also found it interesting and we spent about 1 1/2 hours touring the Courthouse, but depending on your desire to read museum plaques of information, you can spend 1/2 hour to several hours. The staff was friendly and showed willingness to provide additional information to guests. We are glad we spent the time to tour the Courthouse, it added to our vacation.

It was wonderful to go inside. You can read about the Dred Scott case and see the courtroom here the case was heard. There is a small gift shop inside, though I didn't spend any time in there. The architecture is beautiful. My kids loved being able to go upstairs. You can go up three floors, I believe. I was surprised how much they liked, but kids love exploring.

There was also a museum inside the courthouse about St. Louis history. I got to run through. It seemed nice, though the kids didn't let me spend much time there...wanting to go upstairs and all.

Since it's free, stop by. It's right near the arch. The park ranger was friendly and helpful too.

We had missed the Old courthouse on some of our stops at St. Louis. This old courthouse is just beautiful inside and outside. Standing outside, you are facing the Arch, this makes such a beautiful picture. Inside, there is a 20 minute film on the Dred Scott Decision. The art inside this museum is fantastic and gives a great history of early times in St Louis that includes a history of the Louisianna purchase. I really enjoyed the visit

We started on the park services' guided tour but it was really hot and stuffy in the building with a lot of other hot smelly tourists. The park guide had a lot of detailed interesting information but we gave up on the tour and looked around. It's free.

Its just a quick stop while you are downtown St. Louis. You could take a walk through after a day Cards game or with a trip to the nearby Gayeway Arch.
Its a perfect spot for children because it is not huge and overwhelming yet you can toss in some history before they even catch on that they are learning.
The City Park is just down the road and that's always a good time for the last kids as well. With a little planning you can make a day of the downtown spots without breaking the banks.
