Owner description: Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history. Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens.

We enjoyed our visit here, the location of the Dred Scott decision. Mock up of that courtroom is here as well as the history behind this event. Much of the inside has been restored and you can get a real feel of days gone by...and it's free!

After the Arch and the Cathedral this place was a bit disappointing. Architcturally it was quite interesting to look around but the best thing was a video about the Dred Scott case. As a non-American I found this informative. You don't need more than an hour here.

This historical significance makes this restored court house a must see. It is beautiful to see, especially with the arch as the back drop and the new baseball stadium

Seems that they are always working to maintain this courthouse. We never get to see it in it's glory when we are there. It seems to always be surrounded in scaffolding.

Did not do the full tour due to the dirt and dust of the renovation that is currently underway, but did enjoy views from the outside and a quick peek inside. The information panels look like this will be a great historic site once it is done.
