Owner description: Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history. Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens.

This historical significance makes this restored court house a must see. It is beautiful to see, especially with the arch as the back drop and the new baseball stadium

Seems that they are always working to maintain this courthouse. We never get to see it in it's glory when we are there. It seems to always be surrounded in scaffolding.

Did not do the full tour due to the dirt and dust of the renovation that is currently underway, but did enjoy views from the outside and a quick peek inside. The information panels look like this will be a great historic site once it is done.

I was hoping to see the rooms furnished and a little more info about the Dred-Scott court case that was decided here. But aside from the BEAUTIFUL rotunda and one courtroom, the other rooms just housed exhibits and artifacts like a museum. Lots of winding stairs to the second floor. Not sure about an elevator.
The front of the building is also going through renovations, so there was scaffolding erected. But the view of the Gateway Arcch was great from the courthouse steps.

At the time we visited the courthouse was undergoing a facelift on the outside and was surrounded by scaffling. The Dred Scott case was first heard here (slave suing for his and his wife's freedom) and the inside reflects this era. Worth a look.
