This zoo was a great value for our family. Entrance was free and parking is free in the lots inside Forest Park. We only walked about 1 1/2 blocks from a free lot to the entrance.

The train ride was fun and helped us get our bearings on the layout. We loved all of the animal. Great variety.

Our one negative comment would be the Children's Zoo. It costs $5 a person, for our family- $25. It was basically some goats, rabbits and a few other farm type animals that we have seen a billion times at various places. Had we known what was (or was not) in the children'szoo, we would have saved our money!

Living in Chicago, I feel that we have great zoo's, but after coming here, I think we need to step up our game.

The enclosures were unbelievable. Loved seeing the animals and venturing around. The train was a lot of fun and allowed us to see a lot of the zoo.

It's a big place, and would be very difficult to complete in a single day.

The St Louis zoo is excellent and seems to be improved upon every year...and it's free. So it's a wonderful place to visit often as you stroll down the tree lined pathways and view the many interesting inhabitants.

We have been here many times and are on our second year in the "Zoo Friends" membership. The zoo's biggest perk is of course the fact that it's free. The main parking lot on the south side of the zoo is a pay lot, but that can be avoided by parking on the street in Forest Park if needed. There is an additional entrance on the far side of the zoo where you can typically fare better with finding a parking spot on the street or you can always park at the art museum and walk over.
The highlights of the zoo for us are typically the elephants, bears, and sea lions. There are quite a few elephants at the zoo and you will almost always end up with a good view of at least a couple. Priya is the newest and always draws a good crowd. These are all asian elephants.
The sea lion sound also tends to draw decent crowds, but can be worth the wait if necessary. There is an underwater viewing tunnel that provides great views of the sea lions as they swim above. If you're lucky you will get to see the red panda next to this exibhit on your way by, but he tends to sleep most of the day.
There is a new enclosure for the Andean bears and painted dogs that just opened in 2014. It provides multiple viewing areas and good views of the bears inside. This exibhit, like the elephants, is part of the River Walk trail that is the one must-do area of the zoo. The trail is listed as one way, though it's not technically enforced as such. Also on this path are the black rhino (though rarely seen), hippos, bat earred fox, hyenas, and cheetahs among other things.
There are also a good collection of big cats at the zoo, although they again are hard to get a look at during the middle of the day (they are cats!) The tiger is usually pretty visible though.
There is a train that runs a loop around the zoo and also a carousel, both of which have additonal fees.
Finally there is the penguin and puffin coast area. This area is always popular, especially on a hot day. Unfortunately this area is closed for the summer of 2014 while they add on the new polar bear point area, set to open in 2015.
The zoo overall is a good time and a great value considering it's free. Becoming a zoo friend will also net parking passes and passes for the train and carousel. You can also get good value by buying refillable cups if you are a frequent visitor.

This is one of the better zoo's that we have been to. Can't beat the cost either as admission is free. There are fees for a number of activities such as the train ride and and some shows, but those are still reasonably priced. There were several exhibits closed when we went but there was still plenty to see.

One minor negative experience was that the gift shop closes when the zoo closes, so if you plan on getting anything, make sure you do it before the official close time. We expected that the main gift shop would be open a bit later than the rest to allow people to stop in on their way out if they chose to stay inside until close. We should have checked on that.

Also, many of the concession stands close well before the zoo closes, some as much as 30 minutes prior. I didn't see that this was a policy but it was irritating to buy one of their refillable cups and then not be able to find any place to fill it up that was open until the zoo closed.

Even with those two minor issues, overall we would highly recommend the St. Louis Zoo.
