Attraction details
Owner description: An authentic player piano fills the air with Scott Joplin melodies as you walk through the modest flat on Delmar Boulevard that Joplin and his wife Belle lived in during their time in St. Louis. Lit by gaslight, the home is furnished as it would have been in 1902 when Joplin was composing songs that would make him a national phenomenon. Scott Joplin House State Historic Site, which stands as a testimony to his talent and hard work, also includes museum exhibits that interpret Joplin’s life. The Rosebud Café, a reconstructed structure that recreates a turn-of-the-century bar and gaming club, is available for rent.

“This museum honors a famous St. Louis musician, father of ragtime!”
Reviewed June 21, 2012

This museum is good sized and takes about an hour to go through. They have re-created the area where Joplin lived while he was in St. Louis. There is also a re-creation of the ragtime bar where he played. They have player pianos and you can choose a roll. My son got to pump the pedal to make the song play. Call ahead to make sure that they still do this. Very educational and informative!

“My favorite pianist”
Reviewed February 3, 2012

Scott Joplin is one of my favorite composers. His home and history is well worth visiting. Just minutes from downtown.

“Besides talking with the staff, my favorite part of this site was the piano room in the back of the first floor.”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

I enjoyed this place but learned more from the staff than I did from the exhibits. For instance, one staff member told me this is the only historic site in the world dedicated to this celebrated and talented muscian. He also said this particular site had been slated for demolition as part of the city's blight removal efforts (afterall, it is located just north of downtown in one of the oldest parts of the city) but someone spray painted "Scott Joplin lived here" on the side of the building and that spurred an investigation. When the truth of the grafiftti was confirmed, it was preserved as a historical site. To this day, no one knows who wrote that or exactly what they knew about Joplin's time here. There wasn't a lot to the museum. The first floor has a few exhibits and a video to watch. The upstairs, accessible only with a guide, is Joplin's actual apartment with a kitchen and a couple of rooms, one including a piano. It was furnished with period pieces, but none of them were actually Joplin's. Besides talking with the staff, my favorite part of this site was the piano room in the back of the first floor where there was a player piano and staff would play reels of Joplin's music. There is also a timeline on the wall which places Joplin's works in a historical perspective. If they don't offer to play music for you, please ask!

Enjoyed learning about this very talented man. Not too much to the house but worth learning about the neighborhood, Scott Joplin's life and music.
