Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Museum of Westward Expansion closed, pending installation of all new museum exhibits. As of March 2, 2015, entry-only ticket or tram ticket required to enter Arch. The nation's tallest monument at 630 feet, the Gateway Arch has beckoned visitors since June 1967. The Gateway Arch commemorates Thomas Jefferson and the role St. Louis played in the westward expansion of the United States. A visit to St. Louis isn't complete without standing at the Arch's base and playing professional photographer, but the view from the outside is only half of the experience. Attractions within the Arch include the Journey to the Top (the last tram leaves one hour before closing); educational programs (will be housed at the Old Courthouse); award-winning documentary movie, Monument to the Dream; and a gift shop. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Note: the address shown is for the Old Courthouse which is acting as the Gateway Arch Ticketing and Visitor Center throughout construction. Pedestrian entrance to the Arch Grounds is at Walnut Street at Memorial Drive or via the Grand Staircase from the riverfront.

“Very cool!”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

It's always exciting to visit a new national park. It was pretty crowded but I was a single rider so I didn't have to wait long to get to the top of the arch. While I do recommend it, this activity is NOT for people that get claustrophobic. I'm not a particularly queezy person but the wind was blowing and so was the arch so my visit to the top was a brief one, but worth the ride.

“Unmissable”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

The arch really dominates the centre of St Louis so you should have no trouble seeing it! We braved the "train" to the top: only 4 of us in a vehicle allegedly seating 5, but 4 was a tight fit. The views from the top are excellent, if a little spoiled by the fact that the glass was filthy! Interesting museum in the base as well. A must in your visit to St Louis.

“Spectacular city dominating structure”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

We did not go up within the Arch but just up to its base. The Gateway Arch dominates so many of my photos around St Louis and it is an incredible monument.

Its sleek design and graceful curve captivated me. Just standing at the bottom and looking up and across and back down conveyed a sense grand design. An architectural delight.

At the time we were there it was dark and near freezing but this did not stop many visitors and a wedding complete with coach and horses being there.

“Amazing view”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

The little cubbies they cram you in to get to the top are kind of scary if you're claustrophobic, but the view is wonderful. They have small windows you can peer out of, but it gets a bit crowded at the top sometimes. You can leave whenever you like though. Oh, and if you like a good hike, you can climb to the top by using the stairwell.

“Great views from the top of St Louis”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

We visited on a cold and wet winter Saturday and had no wait. Straight to the top of the arch where you can see all around St Louis. Definitely a do not miss if you are going to St Louis.
