Fantastic magical evening. we decided to take a last minute trip with the challenge of trying something new. We had the most beautiful weather to watch a performance under the stars. Romantic and unforgettable!

It is the best outdoor venue for musicals. We have bought tickets and sat in the free section, which are the back 9 rows. The line for the free seats starts about 4pm outside the gate at the top if the hill. Seats are individual with backs and arm rests. Once in the gate save as many seats as you want and let the rest of your party join you later. Bring soft sided coolers and any kind of food. It is normally hot weather but there are two fans and they give away paper fans. Complimentary water at concessions near free seats. It is a beautiful location.

I was recently back in St. Louis visiting my parents, and we had a chance to go to the Muny. It was great to take my kids to a show, and let them experience outdoor theater like I did growing up. If you are in St. Louis in the summertime, this is a "must do" experience. The new fans they have are quiet enough to run during the show, which is a blessing on hot summer nights. But the night we were there was perfect anyway.

I was first introduced to Broadway show tunes as a boy, under ten, at the MUNY- St. Louis Missouri's outdoor municipal theater. Of course my parents dragged me there every summer. No self-respecting boy would want to spend a sweltering summer evening listening to showtunes. But then the overture would begin and and the crowd hushed and the summer night was color and lights and beautiful music. As a boy I was transported to the Kingdom of Siam and to Catfish Row. To River City and to an island in the South Pacific.
The MUNY is magic. In fifty years I have never seen an unprofessional performance, have never been disappointed and have always been entertained. I've left the MUNY with tunes playing in my head more times than I can count. It can be a miserable, humid St. Louis evening but when the show begins, it all falls away and you are in another world. Last evening the first notes of the Porgy and Bess overture brought me there again. Summertime, and the livin' is easy.

Nothing beats an entertainment treat like outdoor theater at a venue which has long been as much a part of St. Louis as the Gateway Arch. Choose A section seats as the pitch in the rows is better than those behind the A section. You will notice it only if you are struggling to see the stage when a cascade of heads in front of you blocks the view. Newly installed cooling fans provide a quieter atmosphere than those just a few years ago. Food prices are a little higher, but not outrageous. Close and free parking can be found along the curb just a few hundred feet from the entrance. Show up two hours before showtime with a picnic and take up space just to the side of the entrance where their are picnic tables and waste cans. On most days and nights there, live music begins just outside the gates in this picnic area about an hour before showtime. The productions are world-class and the outdoor atmosphere will have you talking about it to everyone you come in contact with after the show.
