The Whiskey Mansion is a beautiful old mansion lovingly restored. My room was very comfy after a long day of travel and work. The freshly baked cookies at the end of the day were a great treat! Breakfast was wonderful and the owner is very interesting and friendly. Location is convenient to downtown St. Joe and easy to get to. Can't wait to go back.

My daughters favorite restaurant is in St Joe, and we had not been there in a while, so made plans to go, about a three hour drive. We usually stay at the very nice Holiday Inn there, but decided to do something different. Checked on the B&Bs in the area as my daughter has not been to one before. Whiskey Mansion was near downtown where our restaurnt is and close to Fredrick Blvd so easy acccess. I called and made reservations direct with Olin, the owner, and he was amazingly pleasant on the phone. I am used to pleasantries that are required by employees, but you could feel in his voice, he was genuinely a wonderful person. I made arrangements for two rooms and was anxious to see the home in person.
We arrived in St Joe, did some shopping, what else would you do with a teenage daughter in tow, and there is plenty of great shopping in St Joe. Then we went and checked in. Oh my! The home is incredible! From the inlaid wood floors and staircases to the restored wood trim, it is amazing, especially when you see the pictures from when the home almost burned to the ground. Rafters caved in, hardly worth restoring, but fortunately, Olin had the ambition to do so, and though a work in progress, relaying tiles, restoring trim and doors and so forth, it is a wonderful home. The rooms were large, beds very comfortable, large claw foot tubs to soak in. After our dinner and shopping at their outdoor mall on the north side of town, we headed to the mansion to relax and watch tv. My daughter came to my room and told me she had just gotten freshly made cookies and milk. I thought that was great, and just Olin taking care of the younger guests. Then a few minutes later, I had another knock on the door, and it was my cookies and milk! What a great touch. A storm was blowing outside, but there was no sound inside, they insulated well when they rebuilt the walls. I slept like a baby on the overstuffed matress, and took a leisurely bath before waking my daughter. We went down about nine, and what wonderful smells coming from the kitchen! Homemade bread and quiche, smoked ham, melon, homemade granola cookies, honey right out of the back yard. It was a wonderful stay, and we will certainly stay there the next time we go. I was worried my daughter might miss the normal swimming pool time we have at most of our stays, but she did not miss it a bit. Olin is an excellent innkeeper, and wonderful to talk to. He definitely makes you feel welcome in his home.

I just came back from a trip to the Kansas City area, I stayed at Whiskey Mansion. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was pleasantly astounded, surprised, and incredibly delighted. I have nothing but fantastic things to say about my stay. I felt immediately welcomed, and at home, even though this house is HUGE!!!! The more I learned about the house and the owner, the more impressed I became. I guess I should begin at the beginning. At the moment, you have to enter through the side porch door (which is actually an old custom I remember from my childhood; friends enter through the back or side door, formal visits enter from the front.) You enter immediately into one of the Parlors on the first floor of the house. Olin, the owner, will greet you with his friendly smile and show you around the house, which again, is HUGE. The first floor includes a handicap access restroom. You have to look past his modesty, he's been working on this house for 12 years, and the detail work is absolutely beautiful. The house is decorated in functional and tasteful antiques and replicas. Nothing is over done, but everything is gorgeous and fabulous.
I chose to stay in the maids room, ($69 a night plus tax) I was expecting to stay in a very small cozy room with a little twin sized bed. I was delightedly mistaken. The room was bigger than my real room at home. It was absolutely beautiful and luxurious. As soon as I brought my suitcase in I plopped on the queen sized bed and enjoyed the comfiness of it all. The bed is sooooo comfortable. My room also had a cushioned rocking chair, a pedestal sink a coffee table and a couple of other lamps. My room did not have an attached bathroom, but the bathroom was literally right outside of my bedroom door, so it didn't matter. My bathroom had a large claw foot tub. I was surprised how easy it was to control the temperature of the water. The one thing that amazed me was how relaxingly quiet the house is. Not a scary kind of quiet, the kind of quiet without any white unnecessary noise in the background, even though you're in the middle of St. Joe.
Olin showed me a couple of the other rooms. They were twice the size of mine, plus they had an attached bathroom.
I scheduled breakfast at 9. I woke up at 8, took a warm soak in a bubble bath and got dressed, when I opened the door to the hallway, I could here Jamie Cullum quietly wafting through the house from the downstairs. It immediately put me in a fantastic mood, so I left my bedroom door open while I finished getting ready so I could hear all the great swing/jazz voices that were playing. It kind of felt like I was transported back to the forties all of a sudden. For some reason, I chose to look out into the backyard, and I couldn't help but notice that there seemed to be a beehive back there.
I went downstairs in my socks (Speaking of downstairs, the grand staircase to the foyer is so unbelievably beautiful! It is solid polished wood, and on the first landing there is a beautiful inlaid wood pattern on the middle of the floor, when Olin finishes the mosaic floored Foyer and the Front entrance, I can just imagine this being a perfect entrance for a bride, or something spectacular like that.) and I found Olin in the Butlers Pantry. He brought out a glass of water, and offered me a cup of coffee, which I gladly accepted. Then he brought out a personal small loaf of warm fresh baked bread for me, with a pad of butter and a bowl of honey. The honey, he said, was organic honey from the bees he keeps. (Ask him about that story if the subject comes up.) Then he brought out a divine breakfast, much of it was made from local farm products. Fruits, Cheese, Ham, and Quiche. yummy! Then he brought me out a granola cookie that he makes himself. (Also scrumptious!) Lastly he brought out a thick slice of bread pudding. Of course, I couldn't eat it all, but I ate as much as I could and I miraculously did not feel over stuffed, I felt healthy, and well fed, and my tummy felt comfortable until lunch time. I had a great conversation with Olin over breakfast while he drank a cup of coffee, and showed me paraphernalia from the original owners of the house.
The one thing to keep in mind, is that this house is still a bit of a work in progress. The mansion caught fire 12 years ago, and the restoration is an ongoing process. Little details aren't complete yet, but what is complete makes up for the missing trim, and rough looking side door. He plans to rebuild the original turret and front porch too. There is some construction going on during the day, but generally only when you should be out of the house enjoying the hidden gems of St. Joe that Olin recommends to you, or the Kansas City area anyway. When this place is finished it is going to be absolutely magnificent, I would recommend it for a wedding, a romantic weekend, a party, a reception, or just a pleasant alternative to a hotel. It's not that much more expensive than a hotel room anyway, and you actually get a brag-worthy breakfast that will make you feel good the rest of the day.
I'm definitely staying here the next time I need to be in the KC area. I will be sure to take pictures. If I lived in KC, I would even just take a weekend here every once in awhile to get away from it all.
