“Extraordinary Experience”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

The Shakespeare Chateau Inn elegantly provides those amenities expected of a luxury B&B: comfortable, clean accommodations and ample, delicious, healthful breakfasts. But it also offers so much more! The stunningly beautiful historic house is filled with antiques, art & stories, and guests are welcomed to learn as much or as little as desired. The superb innkeeper is knowledgeable & passionate, not only about her outstanding establishment, but also about the community & city which surround it. Thank you, Isobel!

Thank you for your review, Sandra, and for your kind words. I so enjoyed your stay here at the Shakespeare Chateau as you and your husband researched family roots in Saint Joseph. I couldn't believe it when you learned that your husband's family had owned the house two doors away from here! I look forward to seeing you both back soon!

I live in Kansas City and took a day trip to St. Joe and this house was the best stop. Not only is the home grand but the caretaker, Isobel, did a wonderful job with the house tour. She mentioned all the details one might miss if you didn't have her to tell you the history of this home.
The architecture in this home is just wonderful, the wood, the wall paper and the flooring. They just don't build homes like this anymore and it's wonderful that one can stay the night in a historic home like this Chateau. It's really a must see when visiting St. Joe, MO.

Yes, this B&B has modern bathroom fixtures, remarkable kitchen, clean facility, and yummy food, and it is luxurious. What you rarely find at any other historical B&B, however, is a chance to see how the railroad baron who could afford luxury in 1885 surpassed the definition of luxury in this day and age. I'm not sure one could find an artisan alive who could create the entrance hall tile floor or the unbelievable dragon staircase. We stayed in the lovely Twelfth Night suite, and although we were arriving late, and heading north, we are so glad we experienced even our short one night stay. We are vegetarians and Isobel accommodated our food preferences with a delicious French toast casserole, fresh coffee, and juice. Wifi was stable and easily accessed.

Room Tip: Twelfth Night room has a shower, which my husband prefers, and no bath.

We stayed in St. Joseph a second night just so we could stay at the Chateau! The house is incredible, which is saying something in a town full of beautiful historic homes. My boyfriend especially enjoyed the tour, since he's obsessed with historic structures. We stayed in the Verona suite, with a huge comfortable bed, gorgeous stained glass and a jacuzzi tub. We enjoyed breakfast on the patio (Isabelle's stuffed french toast is to die for), watching the renovation of the house across the street. St. Joseph is a beautiful place to visit - we'll definitely be going back!

What a treat to be given the opportunity to stay in this elegant home. The building is magnificent, the windows are beautiful and the innkeeper a delightful hostess. The Twelfth Night room was great, but we had the chance to see all rooms and didn't see any we wouldn't choose. Really lovely.

Room Tip: No bad choice.

The pleasure was mine, indeed, Catherine, to host you on your recent trip to St. Joseph. Here at the Shakespeare Chateau I have the pleasure of meeting folks from right here in the Midwest and from all around the country from New York to California, and from northernmost Minnesota to the Florida Keys. I hope you'll visit again soon!

A feast for the eyes and a balm for the soul, the Shakespeare Chateau combines historic elegance with comfort and a warm welcome from the innkeeper, Isabel. We stayed in the Romeo and Juliet suite, which features a luxurious deep bathtub, excellent bed and bedding, and spacious adjoining library. We would definitely return.
