Tripadvisor has made traveling across country much more pleasant for my wife and me. We like to avoid the usual fast food places and find something local or wholesome or both. In the past this has meant leaving the main roads and circling through the town that was bypassed. Occasionally we got lucky and spotted a local café. Sometimes these were great; sometime they were simply fast food served in a different setting. Now with the help of technology we can view what is available on-line and choose with more information. Tripadvisor is our source of choice.
A prime example of this happened yesterday driving to St. Louis from Springfield, MO. We came up with Sybill’s Restaurant and Gift Shop a few miles off I-44 near St.James River a bit east of Rolla. It was great. A restaurant that looked like a stately home set among shading oaks. Great food. Great service in spite of being crowded (often a good sign). Fair prices. This is the type place a little off the beaten path—if you aren’t a local—but well worth any extra effort to reach it. In fact the diversion was probably less than ten minutes and we wasted twice that driving through the business route through Rolla (to the west) just looking before resorting to the iphone.

Sybill's apparently is a local legend, considered the finest and most expensive restaurant around. When I mentioned in Rolla where I planned to have dinner, people's faces lit ip.

Well, it is quite fine, and not expensive at all for the excellence of the fare. And this is not a relative thing - Sybill's would be a special place no matter where it was located.

Be warned, however. Sybill's is adjacent to an affiliated gift shop, and the decor is decidedly gift-shop woman-focused in a way that would be considered rather kitschy if not for the quality of the items and the consistent care that has gone into their inclusion and placement. The place has its own integrity. The landscaping and garden add to the upscale, homey presentation. And it's comfortable, large, and broken into dining rooms that provide a sense of privacy. Sybill herself did the seating both times we were there. The service was attentive, well-rehearsed and rather friendly. I could have skipped hearing the same elaborate "the smell of the smoker has been driving me crazy all day" story told to each table, but that's quibbling.

The dinner itself? One off note: The house salad was bit too wet and the house dressing could have had more oomph, but I don't mind iceberg. Appetizers were great - clever and delicious. And the entrees were perfect - a large smoked pork "porterhouse" on asparagus risotto and smoked spare ribs on brilliantly done buffalo fries. Absolutely perfect. Dessert also was lovely - a salty caramel-pretzel ice cream and a spumoni. Flavors were inventive without being silly, and the attention and commitment showed in everything (except that salad). An example was the perfect temperature and texture of the ice cream - it takes care to serve it "just right," and when dessert shows care you know a place has dedication. A second visit showed the same great dishes and presentation, with chicken and a strip steak.

So do you want to know how much we liked Sybill's? It's 94 miles from home and we already are making plans to take friends there for dinner. That's how much.

I live in Arkansas and found Sybill's by accident a few years ago when traveling through on I-44 and liked it so much we've made a point to return to St James several times. The whole experience is delightful, from food to atmosphere to service. At various times we've had tables in the main dining room, the small side room with elegant old fashioned velvet draperies, as well as more casual lunch in the cozy bar from which you can enjoy a view of the lovely grounds and countryside. All are equably enjoyable, and on a nice day they serve outside on the wide covered porch. My last dinner started with an excellent blue cheese salad, then a small filet cooked to perfection. Next day for lunch I ordered lobster shrimp bisque, catfish sandwich and fries, all were perfect. My companions were as happy with their choices as I was. Oh, and desserts too! I honestly can't remember exactly what we shared but they were delicious. Be sure to take time to browse the charming gift shop, separate from the restaurant on the front of the property. And if you're lucky Sybill may be in attendance to greet you!

What a beautiful restaurant with such hospitality! This is a fine dining restaurant with a nice variety of delicious and beautifully prepared dishes. There is also a very nice store separate, but a few steps away from the restaurant that we enjoyed visiting, with so many nice, decorative and whimsical things to choose. A must see. We will definitely be back!
