The best resort of our 3 week stay in Sri Lanka by far. It’s just a stunning place to stay and will return. We can’t thank the management and staff enough who all made our stay so memorable. The spa was also excellent and great value. We will definitely be returning here
Date of stay: March 2019
Room Tip: All the rooms that we saw were fabulous but the signature suite was a wow factor

This was the last stop on our wonderful Sri Lanka tour and we stayed in an Ocean Signature suite for 6 nights. The room is amazing- absolutely huge with full width bi-fold doors, comfortable bed, Absolutely the most beautiful well designed bathroom with beautiful mirrors, decor and a good shower. The sheets weren’t the softest we had in Sri Lanka- good quality but not very smooth. It’s a pity the balcony front doesn’t have glass panels to give a clear unobstructed view of the sea instead of the wooden panels but this obviously is just a missed design feature. There is nothing we could think of that was missing, the toiletries were lovely and the dressing and wardrobe area was very well designed. The view of the sea and the turtles bobbing up for breath was wonderful. The single air conditioning unit struggles to keep the room cool enough and as it’s in the dressing area it doesn’t seem to cool down the bed area, even on full setting. The fan above the bed is so high it has little effect. I was a little too warm most nights. I was also awoken at 6.15 each morning by someone moving furniture across the floor very loudly below our room. This was very annoying as we’d had quite a few early starts and Sri Sharavi was a relaxing end of holiday hotel.
We didn’t feel we got a very good explanation of the services and downstairs communal kitchen and pantry area on arrival. We weren’t aware that we could get water from the jugs in the fridge downstairs for the first couple of days. We had a fridge in the bedroom and tea and coffee making facilities so couldn’t see the need for a separate kitchen downstairs. However others were using it. Also we weren’t offered any options for dining anywhere other than the main communal dining area at any time. We ate out in the evenings as we prefer to try different local restaurants and there are some very good ones just 5 minutes away by tuk tuk. The main beach at Mirissa has a great atmosphere. It was most surprising though to arrive back just after 10.00pm and to be told we couldn’t have a drink as the bar was closed! We have never come across this before.
We celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary whilst staying at Sri Sharavi and even though our travel company had advised all our hotels and every other one provided cakes or fizz our Anniversary wasn’t mentioned at Sri Sharavi, not even a ‘congratulations!’ from staff.
We would expect a more personal service in such a small ‘exclusive’ hotel. Madu was lovely and always had a smile for us we thought he was the only member of staff whose personality shone. We were however never called by our names and even after 6 days the manager did not know who I was or which room I was staying in when I went to enquire about a late check out. That said we were given a late check out and were allowed to use the room until 4.00pm and the pool and other facilities including having a shower until we left at 9.00pm which was greatly appreciated.
Breakfast was varied and usually very well cooked but a little erratic- my husband ordered the full English but the sausages didn’t arrive until he’d finished everything else one day. Another day the fried eggs were undercooked and the poached eggs were over cooked. On the last day I ordered soft poached eggs with crispy bacon and the bacon didn’t arrive until I’d finished the eggs. The Sri Lankan breakfast was very good.
We like a gin and tonic as the sun sets but the bar service again was not great. I am sure there was only local gin available when we asked. We usually had to go up to the bar to order another drink as it was hard to get the staff’s attention even when sitting on the deckchairs quite close to them with empty glasses. We also found the gin and tonics to be the most expensive of our holiday once service and taxes were added. We went down to Mirissa beach by Tuk Tuk for less than £2.00 instead for sunset where every bar has a great value and seemingly never ending happy hour and you can watch the surfers and also get better view of the sunset. It is very good for people watching! There are also many restaurants where they have a stall that you choose fish and lobsters caught by the local fisherman and they cook them for you. So lovely.
We loved observing the many turtles just off-shore at Sri Sharavi . However there is quite a lot of plastic rubbish washing up the beach. I collected several bin bags full including plastic bottles, plastic bags and drinking straws and feel the staff should do this more often instead of spending time picking up fallen leaves. Also maybe encourage guests do the ‘5 pieces of plastic’ campaign where everyone who walks down the beach is encouraged to pick up 5 pieces of plastic rubbish to be disposed of correctly. So many turtles and whales which are a big attraction here are dying all over the World with stomachs full of plastic and this is terrible situation which needs to be reversed, It is appreciated that the hotel uses stainless steel straws. However please treasure the turtles on the beach and please don’t use bright flashlights or allow any flash photography whilst they are laying their eggs. Your videos show that lights are being shone directly at the turtles. Bright lights are really bad for them.
My husband really enjoyed the big waves but I preferred to walk down to the safe swimming area to the right along the beach. The pool is also huge and excellent and there are always sun beds available however we were most amused that people were reserving beds with towels and bags very early but not sitting on them as though they were on a package holiday in Benidorm.
We really enjoyed our stay overall at Sri Sharavi but do feel just a few tweaks to a more personal service and more environmental awareness around the turtles would make the place perfect. I hope you find the review helpful- we always stay in similar small boutique hotels and we are comparing the service and experience with those.

Thank you for posting such a thorough review and for bringing your numerous suggestions and observations to my attention. I have met already with the various departments to address your comments and criticisms. I will also pass along your compliments to Madu.
And please accept from us belated anniversary congratulations. The staff had been instructed to present you with a complimentary bottle of wine at dinner, but as you chose to take all of your dinners out the wine was never presented. Unfortunately I was away from the villa for 3 days during your stay here.
I've spoken with the staff and explained that in the future complimentary and celebratory items may also be presented at breakfast or lunch or even Happy Hour.
Regarding the beach, our maintenance staff clean the beach in front of the villa each day. And while I agree with you that beach plastic and rubbish is a global crisis, our staff are not able to clean the very long stretch of public beach that borders the Sri Sharavi property. Thank you for your efforts and for showing a good example to all.

After a busy week of touring and staying in big international hotels, arriving at Sri Sharavi was like opening the gates and finding yourself in paradise. This is a beautiful property consisting of 4 villas with tastefully furnished rooms. There is s small beachside dining area and bar overlooking a deserted and stunning long sandy beach. The food was excellent - all beautifully prepared and presented - a different fresh juice every morning and a different dish of the day - and plenty of choices to suit every taste. I loved the salads and ‘catch of the day’. The staff are friendly and welcoming and treat you as if they are there just for you to fulfil your every wish. A big shout out to the wonderful Madu with his gentle manner and gorgeous smile. Didn’t get to use the spa because we were too busy enjoying the view. There is a fantastic 40m swimming pool, which was great because the sea was sometimes a little rough for swimming. I have travelled a lot to many countries all over the world and this is one of the nicest places I’ve ever stayed. We will be back!
