“Really the Vernon County Museum”

I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of information specific to the Bushwhackers and the Jay-hawkers. As a Civil War buff, I was looking for this in particular. The museum does a fine job of displaying history from the Native Americans to the more recent history. The tour of the old jail building and sheriff's residence was a highlight.

“Easily exceeds expectations”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

I'm really not that into the Civil War . . . it's over, right . . . so I was not that eager to visit. But, I left very impressed with their many historical exhibits, which offer a fairly detailed glimpse into time gone by. Definitely worth a stop.

“A true gem!”

What a delightful surprise to find in a small town! Hidden under the library in Nevada, Missouri is the Bushwhacker Museum, a testament to the history of America.

From information about the victorian homes to the history of medical care, the museum is delightfully educational. The rotating exhibits on local folks who went on to bigger things (John Houston was born here, another actress went on to win numerous awards and her Tony is on display).

The volunteers and staff of the museum are excellent. What a delightful way to spend a few hours. For PEO's and parents visiting Cottey College, you won't regret this glimpse into Americana.

“Not to be missed!”
Reviewed July 7, 2009

No matter how much time you can spend, the museum is well worth a visit. Lots of local history and huge collection of local artifacts spread throughout several rooms. The museum is bright and cheerful, and Terry Ramsey, the person on staff, is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and enjoys telling you as much as you want to know. Currently and until October, a large display of memorabilia from Alice Ghostley, who was born in the area, is on exhibit, highlighting her movie, television and Broadway career. The museum has been designated as one of the recipients of the traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
