“Wife had gall bladder removed the next day.”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

Though my wife's following surgery followed the next morning, the food she ate was NOT the primary reason for the helicopter ride, just a contributing factor. The food is slightly overpriced. The steaks have too much fat. However, when they hold special events there they do a nice job. The prime rib is very expensive for the area but tastes great. They have messed up our order more than once on carry out but fixed it when we point it out. The food is greasy. Portions are okay. Appetizers are all very good.
It is worth it to drive an hour to Columbia for a better dining experience.

“Glad we went, but won't make special trip again.”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

We heard nothing but rave reviews about AJ's, so decided to take a 63 mile drive north from Columbia, MO on a Sunday afternoon to have an early dinner. The ambiance was casual; very easy access off US 63; the service was very good; however, the food was less than we expected. The word that came to mind at the end of the meal was bland. The onion rings were in a light batter, done to perfection, but tasteless. The warm garlic croutons were tasty all by themselves; so glad they brought a separate bowl full to the table, munch, munch! Surprised by the deviled egg appetizer, yummy! And the brown sugar bacon, delicious! The presentation with very cold plates for the deviled eggs and the salad bowls, perfect touch. My husband's steak was not medium as ordered; not a sign of pink anywhere, disappointed. Next special trip will be in the other direction and another 30 minutes on the road to Sybill's in St James, MO. a world of difference for the better!

“Very good experience”
Reviewed February 22, 2014

Great place to eat, the food was fantastic. I had a breaded tenderloin which was twice the size as the bun and very thick, besides tasting wonderful. Others at the table had burgers that were very satisfying. Onion rings are one of their specialties and for good reason, best I've had. Only one negative I experienced, when I asked what beers were on tap the waitress didn't know, she knew the names, such a Schafleys, but couldn't tell me what type of beer. It happened to be a stout, had I of wanted a lager I would have be greatly disappointed. Overall a good experience and will return. Oh, and the dessert was perfect, gooey chocolate brownie with their homemade ice cream.

“A good thing has gone”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

AJ's was a restaurant that I patronized at least three times a month and always relied on as a solid place to take out of town visitors for a fun experience. The food was tasty, priced appropriately, and the atmosphere was relaxing. Those days have passed. I have never appreciated the Pear Tree, and now all things that I disliked about the Pear Tree have consumed AJ's. The food prices have skyrocketed while the quality has plummeted. The cute, bubbly, and unassuming wait staff have been replaced with a staff that have the nerve to suggest $100 per bottle wines with a mannerism that implies anything less is beneath them. A solid reminder from the pear tree is that the $50 steaks remain unpredictable in their quality, though the staff will argue that you don't know what you are talking about. Funny, I do not have this problem at CC City Broiler. Great job Abbadessa brothers, you have taken a great thing and ruined it.

“OMG ~ What the @*%$ Happened Here?”
Reviewed December 17, 2013

We expected to go the AJ's of our last visit and found ourself in some Bizarro World.
Obvious that the owner/ management is trying to turn this establishment into the long lost "Pear Tree" with all the poo-poo prices. Did they not see that the building is still some re-purposed car repair garage or something like that. Shingles nailed to an add-on don't really change much. I'll offer a wake up call here folks; your beloved Pear Tree burned down. Hey Baby, what you got, Well, It ain't poo-poo and now, what what you've done, ain't AJ's either. It has become a totally different place, with some crazy food prices.....We're gone.
