You should stop and get the history of the Lake to fully appreciate the area. After visiting the Wilmore drive straight out of the driveway across Business 54 and follow that road up to the old housing units still in use today. Then continue to the little park for more "input" after that follow the road down to the Dam. Worth doing and it's free!

Cozy, quaint and quite. Feeling off remoteness, yet near all the attractions of Lake of the Ozarks.

Willmore Lodge has a beautiful view of the lake. It holds a small museum detailing how the dam was built, and is very interesting.
It also details a history of the area before theybuilt the lake. It explains how they produce electricity at the dam. It is free. There is also tourist information there.

We basically stumbled across Willmore Lodge after driving over Bagnell Dam and going to the Scenic Overlook just off of US 54 (Bus) just north of the dam. (The scenic overlook is pretty cool, too.) Willmore Lodge is on the other side of the highway. It has a colorful history, especially to St. Louisans who may recognize the name of Cyrus Willmore, developer of St. Louis Hills.

The main room of the lodge is a beautiful 2-story room with beams, chandeliers and a picture window showing a fantastic view of the lake. In the side rooms, which must have originally been guest rooms, there are wonderful displays of the Osage River area before the dam was built, video interviews from some of the dam workers, engineering models and lots to read. While we were there, a girl scout troop came through for a guided tour. We didn't know they did tours, so we latched on.

We also drove beyond the scenic overlook, going by the substation and down the hill to the bottom of the dam on the river side. Interesting!

All in all, between the scenic overlook, the up-close look at the dam and the lodge visit, it was a great way to kill a couple of hours on a cloudy day.
