We had our wedding in front of the fireplace in the lobby! The staff was so kind, they lit candles and brought us glasses and sparkling cider.
We'll be back!

Our daughter and son-in-law's wedding reception was held 10/30/10 at the Silver Rails Event Center in Laplata so our friends and family filled the Depot Inn and Suites since it's also in Laplata. The entire hotel was blocked for months prior to the wedding which allowed us to all stay together and added to the festive wedding atmosphere. My husband and I stayed in the Western Suite which was very nice with a big garden tub which our younger daughter enjoyed. She also loved spending a little time in the indoor pool. Just like last year when we spent a night at Depot Inn in October, the rooms were very clean and so was the rest of the motel. Management and staff were very accomodating to our needs and we had a great stay. We will definitely stay again sometime!!

The Depot Inn & Suites, La Plata, Missouri

A group of 4 of us set out on an Amtrak trip to this hotel. We could not have been more pleased with our stay. Brock was waiting to pick us up at the station in the courtesy shuttle van. He was very polite and helpful. He offered us the use of the hotel golf cart to go to the local convenience store and even ran to get towels to wipe the seats that were wet from the rain. When we asked him to change our room to a front view he did so in a very friendly manner. All the people that worked there, including Sally whom we got to know, could not have been friendlier. The manager sat with us to apologize for a very small incident. This place made us feel as if we were family!
We had chosen this hotel specifically because we are train watchers and the hotel has now spoiled us for any other hotels we will ever stay at. Even though the train track is not right by the hotel it is close enough that you could hear trains all night long.
The decor was a total train theme. The richly painted walls with the bright white accents and the crown molding were perfect. The rooms were spotless; the beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows and warm comforter. The towels were plush and plentiful. The pool was warm and very clean.
The lobby was spacious with a pool table, games, a large TV and a monitor of the train track so even back at the hotel you didn’t have to miss seeing a train. We ate a simple complimentary continental breakfast and coffee was always available.
We were amazed at all the train memorabilia there is at the hotel. It is almost like a museum.
There was a putting green and a playground out back and bikes were available for use.
The finishing touch was plenty of rockers under a canopy at the front of the hotel.
There was a restaurant (The Red Rooster) where we ate several times within walking distance and also a convenience store. The track lookout station was a bit of walk but we used the golf cart to go back and forth. The lookout was enclosed with a table, plenty of chairs you could take out onto the deck and a train monitor. There were even Maw & Paw outhouses right there that were as clean as an outhouse could be. Free Internet was provided there and also at the hotel.
We would definitely recommend The Depot Inn & Suites for anyone but especially for train lovers. 5 Stars!

My family traveled to Kirksville to pick up our teen from camp at Truman State. When I asked a friend from there where to stay, she said "my Mom's house." She didn't know about this gem just south of Kirksville in La Plata. We only found it because Kirksville hotels were sold out as we waited until the last minute to book. I am so glad we did wait as this was one of the cleanest, most comfortable, charming hotels I have ever stayed in - especially for the price! My husband and I were very impressed with the simple, train theme decor with the comfortable beds, white linens and crown molding! It was so comfortable we all overslept. Breakfast was basic - but what kid doesn't like a choice of every sugary Kellogg cereal and chocolate donuts and milk! And for those who want more, you can go to the Rooster next door (we had a delicious dinner there the night before). Our tween who drove to Alaska last summer with her grandparents and spent 45 nights in hotels woke up and said it was the best night sleep she had ever had in a hotel. Our preschooler loved the trains out front, the train themed playground and pool (where there was a bucket with pool toys and plenty of towels). All three kids loved driving the golf cart supplied by the Inn to the train overlook - we timed it perfectly as just as we got there a freight train went by. We would recommend this Inn to anyone going to Kirksville or looking to get away for a night/weekend!!

We live in Kirksville, MO which is just around 10 miles north of Laplata. However, we attended a wedding and reception in Laplata and decided it would be fun to take the kids and spend the night close to the party. The pool is nice and the kids especially enjoy the huge water spout which hangs from the ceiling and goes off after a train whistle 'warning'! The rooms were so tastefully decorated and comfortable. The beds and linens were superb and the rooms have a mini frig and microwave. We really enjoyed our stay and will probably go back sometime just for the heck of if.
