We had been to JJ's once before for my husband's birthday celebration last year and had a nice meal at the bar. We were impressed by the ambiance and food at the time, although the bar staff was not at all as personable as what we've experienced elsewhere and on that particular evening it felt like they were catering to their crowd of "regulars" or close by residents on the Plaza. We decided to go back again for our 40th anniversary recently and made reservations for the two of us this time in the dining room. Upon arrival, the hostess was upbeat and acknowledged that it was noted we were there to celebrate a special occasion. Unfortunately, this fell on the same night that the annual Plaza Art Festival ended and a few hours after the first Sunday home game of the season for the Chiefs. The dining room was busy, but not full to capacity. It appeared that they were just short staffed. Our server had been assigned a very large party of about 25 and was more attentive to their needs than ours, although there were other servers, with fewer tables to oversee. It took a while after being seated for her to even show up to take our order, but when she did she acknowledged the delay and offered an apology. That may have temporarily smoothed things over. However, throughout the meal it was apparent that the larger party was more of a priority than our anniversary celebration. They really should have been sectioned off by the door which divides the two dining areas to provide them privacy, and make it less obvious to others as the reason for the server to be so preoccupied. We couldn't help notice the difference in service. The food was very good, the restaurant is well appointed and upscale, but twice we have experienced a real disconnect when it comes to service here. I believe in second chances, but with prices being comparable to other top-notch restaurants on the Plaza, JJ's is certainly not striving to win over the customer by delivering a memorable experience to all. In fact, it seems that they have their preferred crowd, and we haven't made that list. Where there are so many other choices, this restaurant has now fallen to the bottom as far as places we will return too.
