If you're doing the local BBQ in this BBQ town, Gates is one of the oldest and most unique places. This particular outlet is the most attractive, comfortable and offers choices not offered at most other (if any) other Gates restaurants. Located East and a little South of the plaza, and West of Hwy 71, the building was built to order. Interesting interior complete with an old trolley car and a "Jim's Tamale" cart on display. If you haven't been to a Gates" before you may be amused by the Gars shouting :"Hi may I help you?" and then shouting the order back to the kitchen. Gates offers usually lean brisket, ham, short & long end pork ribs, mutton and sausage all smoked. I had a beef and 1/2 sandwich on this trip and it was huge. My other favorites are the short end ribs (some of the best in town) and the sausage. My favorite sauce is the original which is unique and a little on the spicy side. What makes this outlet unique is two very good sides (not available at other Gates'): a potatoe cubes (with skins on) grilled with a BBQ spice and grilled BBQ spiced vegatables with carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Both are very good. Other sides offered are the usual including beans, fries and a macaroni salad. Not cheap to eat here but the coffee is free.
