“The best outlet of a local chain”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

If you're doing the local BBQ in this BBQ town, Gates is one of the oldest and most unique places. This particular outlet is the most attractive, comfortable and offers choices not offered at most other (if any) other Gates restaurants. Located East and a little South of the plaza, and West of Hwy 71, the building was built to order. Interesting interior complete with an old trolley car and a "Jim's Tamale" cart on display. If you haven't been to a Gates" before you may be amused by the Gars shouting :"Hi may I help you?" and then shouting the order back to the kitchen. Gates offers usually lean brisket, ham, short & long end pork ribs, mutton and sausage all smoked. I had a beef and 1/2 sandwich on this trip and it was huge. My other favorites are the short end ribs (some of the best in town) and the sausage. My favorite sauce is the original which is unique and a little on the spicy side. What makes this outlet unique is two very good sides (not available at other Gates'): a potatoe cubes (with skins on) grilled with a BBQ spice and grilled BBQ spiced vegatables with carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Both are very good. Other sides offered are the usual including beans, fries and a macaroni salad. Not cheap to eat here but the coffee is free.

“Kansas City BBQ Institution”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

Despite being yelled at when you walk in the door "May I help you, sir", (a policy I wish was abandoned), Gates BBQ has helped define BBQ with several locations through out Kansas City. Dishes are tender and succulent and meats with number of respectable side dishes. Larger parties would do well to order a platter instead of individual dishes to save dollars. Soda and beer is available.

“One of Two Classic KC BBQ Spots You Must Try”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

Gates has been a Kansas City institution for decades, and they have never let their dedication to improvement lag. The latest trip to their flagship restaurant in mid-town KC was another joyful BBQ experience.

For those not familiar with barbecue styles, the Kansas City style involves a lot more beef (not pork), long and slow cooking, and a very tangy kind of sauce that doesn't resemble the sugary, tomato-y ones you get in most grocery stores or at Texas establishments.

We had the short ribs, succulent beef falling off of generous bones with just the right amount of sauce. The french fries are a little thick for my taste, but they are crispy and always cooked just right. If you don't like the regular sauce, there are hotter, milder, and sweeter versions available, and service is almost aggressively friendly. The call "Hi, May I help you?" hits your ears as you walk in the door. Don't miss it.

“One of their original locations since the 70's”

My favorite KC Barbeque, and has always been. Their sandwiches, and fries are great. From the time they yell "May I help you" it will be only seconds until you are eating this great KC Barbeque
