The creativity that allowed Chef Celina Tio go far on the Next Iron Chef contest (and win Jame Beard award) was evident in the dishes. But on the night I was there, the execution was not there, as my pork shoulder was extremely dry. Also, all four of us felt that the flavors did not really "pop". I must admit though the fennel puree was divine. All four of us, agreed that the desserts were not worth it. Portions were on the small side, but the prices were not exorbitant. Setting was small and casual. Great by-the-glass wine list with reasonable pricing. Having the celebrity chef come out and thank us at the end was a nice touch. However, Debbie Gold's The American Restaurant is the better celebrity chef restaurant in town, although much pricier.

Service was fair, the food was decent, although not of the caliber one would expect for the price. Attention wine stewards, Pinot Noir is not served at a room temp of 75 F. I expect every restaurant in this price range to know this. So, it's never a good sign when the meal starts this way. Overall, mediocre and you can do much better in a fine dining town like Kansas City.

We had the good fortune recently to eat at Julian on a Monday evening. On Mondays and Tuesdays they offer 3 courses for $30. Wine bottles are also half off. We enjoyed all the food and had lovely seating outside. Wait staff were friendly without being obsequious. All courses were thoughtfully prepared using local ingredients where possible. The only thing that bothered us was a couple at a nearby table (we were on the outdoor patio) changing their baby's diaper at the table. Not very hygenic!

This Italian-themed restaurant with indoor & outdoor seating in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City has an interesting menu and chef.

I knew when she said that mothers day they would be serving family style we should of passed. The last time I ate here the food was outstanding, 3 courses for $30 was a great deal, this time the family style, we left hungry and not overly impressed. We had a table of 4 and we received the same portion size as a table of 2 received.
I will definately give Julian another chance and hope for the first experience and not the latter.
