The story of how these gentlemen discovered and retrieved the artifacts is an almost greater story than what the completeness of the collection tells us. Bob Hawley, one of the drivers of the project and well in to his years, came in and offered additional comments/stories and answered questions with charm and humor. This project and museum are a labor of love - the attention to detail, the art of telling a story, passion for the Midwest all bring it to life.
We will be back to see how the story evolves - even 20+ years later they are still learning.

I"m not usually much for things like this but the group I was with took this tour so I went along. It was a lot of fun, very informative, and truly amazing how these businessmen searched for buried treasure and found it! A good way to kill a couple hours and learn something at the same time. Took a bit less than 2 hours but a nice place to visit.

We learned about this museum when we saw a brief television news story. Sounded interesting, so during a recent trip back home to the Kansas City area, we decided to take in the Steamship Arabia exhibit. We are so glad we did--this is perhaps the most interesting exhibit we have ever seen!

From barrels of nails to tools and equipment to dishes to everyday household items and even edible food, this is a fantastic collection of Civil War era items. The search and recovery is a interesting story, but the preservation techniques are equally interesting.

The tour starts with a docent giving the history of the steamship along with the story of the recovery process followed by a brief (10 minutes) film. The rest of the time is yours to explore the exhibit which are very well done.

Some advice. Allow about three hours to visit the museum. Also, try to go near the end of the day to avoid large crowds and school groups. Finally, except for the book section, we thought the gift shop was pretty mediocre.

Oh, yes. The museum is located at the City Market--the original farmers' market of Kansas City. Used to be a pretty sketchy area, but is now undergoing a renaissance with a growing number of restaurants and shops. Worth spending some time exploring.

One of the best things to do in KC. Very, very interesting. An actual antebellum steamboat that sank in the MIssouri River and all the items and animals on Board at the time she sank. They are still unearthing items that were under water for over 100 years. Well worth a visit.

Great displays on a great river story. My husband did the sight seeing while I attended a conference.
