This is not like anything we have seen before. It's a slice of life preserved for us to see. It's appropriate for all family members. I want to go back again.

You must see this to believe it! Everything a homesteader in the 1800's might need or want loaded on a steam boat and sunk. Treasure hunters turned preservationists found the wreck and turned their adventure into a stunningly fascinating museum.

Nowadays the majority of consumer goods travel by truck across the nation, but there was a time when steamboats gave the same service on the river. And they had many hazards to deal with as they went along the Missouri River. One of these steamboats, the Arabia, hit a log and sank. All aboard save one were saved. and this museum showcases the cargo it carried.
The Arabia was bound for towns and villages carrying dry goods and supplies for the many stores that each town had. And the museum showcases the artifacts that it carried, which were found with the ship when it was excavated from a field where many layers of mud had buried it. The story of that excavation is an amazing one, and seeing what people would have bought back then in the general stores is a history lesson in itself. This is an astounding effort by a local family in Independence that has paid off in a first-class display of early 1800 merchandise, and the story of the riverboats that carried them to far-flung cities and towns.

An absolutely fascinating look into the mid 1800's. Seeing everyday items that were used over 150 years ago, displayed in mint condition. This whole excavation and restoration was done by family members with no professional experience, but created an ongoing exhibit. What is on display is only a fraction of is continuously being cleaned and exhibited. Go more than once!!!

This is a great place to go. Very interesting. But you need to go at least once a year because they keep bringing out new items from the ship.
