We had our wedding at Hatcher's recently and we were very pleased. The ceremony was in the beautiful gardens and the horse and carriage was a wonderful and worthwile experience. The service was excellent and the reception room was breathtaking. We spent the night in the tower suite which was very private and the room was exceptional. We had a very good nights sleep and there was no pressure on us leaving by a certain time which made the morning after very relaxing. Some of our family stayed in the cottage and were also impressed. I am very grateful for all the effort put in by Jeanette and Colin as well as their staff to make our wedding day very special and would recommend staying here to anyone.

Hatcher's Manor provided an amazing and romantic location for our valentine's getaway! Their spacious rooms included everything you need including fridge, microwave, sink and bench space, stunning four-poster queen size beds and a very spacious bathroom including shower and two-person spa bath. The service was impeccable and the staff always friendly and helpful. To top off the perfect weekend the Manor offers a historical tour of Richmond in a carriage led by stunning Clydesdale horses. The tour was informative, with Bron knowing all there is to know about Richmond's history, and romantic to boot! Would definitely return to Hatcher's manor!!!

We chose to stay at Hatcher's manor because it was affordable and ticked most of my "essentials" boxes, which are: kitchen/kitchenette, bath tub/spa, cot for the baby. Richmond isn't too far from Hobart, and it is a charming little village.

We were given our accommodation away from the main house. There were 4 self contained rooms where we stayed. I'm quite sure there were other guests occupying 1 or more of the rooms when we stayed, but we couldn't hear them from where we were.

Our suite had a separate bedroom, spa, kitchenette (no stovetop), lounge and dining area.

The bed was very creaky, and I was a bit worried that it would wake the baby as we got into the bed to sleep at night.

Colin and Jeanette were very nice and friendly. They cooked us our hot breakfasts (included in our tarriff).

There is a little hobby farm at the back, and the chickens and rabbit roam about freely, which unfortunately means there were droppings on the pathways. We also met the pet sheep and clydesdale horses at the paddock

This is a beautiful establishment with two very charming hosts in Colin and Jeanette.

Our room was very spacious and comfortable with a very large bathroom and a great spar bath. We loved the farm atmosphere and especially the fresh fruit. The meals are first class and more than we could eat.

If you want a first class rural setting then this is the place fore you.

We stayed at Hatchers Manor because of a review in the local free paper. It had a gorgeous full page photo on the front cover and a glowing review of this property. It looked quite nice from the outside. When we walked inside our front door there were chook droppings which the owner came and cleaned up (all done with no shoes on!). When we went upstairs to our accommodation we immediately wanted to open windows as it was very stuffy and hot. One of the windows in the main room was broken and most screens were broken. Two of us went into the small bedroom where there was hardly room to walk and tried to open the window. It was a smal fixed window which obviously would not allow any air in. One person had to sleep behind the door which we had to leave open to try to get some air from the long hallway. The people staying in the main room had to sleep with windows wide open to allow us to get some air so they slept with the doonas on and we slept without them. In a week in Tassie this was by far the worst accommodation-very disappointing.

Where to begin with this disaster? We booked to stay in the Killymoon Suite with our young children for five nights and were placed in the St John’s Suite on arrival, as it was larger. No problem with that, but there was only tepid water for my wife’s shower and only cold water for mine. Two of the three lights in the children’s room didn’t work; nor did two of the three lights in the bathroom. It was too dark to shave. The telephone was not connected. Not what one would expect from a “four star” (according to their website) property.

On day two, there were further water issues. Warm – but not hot – showers were possible and the promised bath for the children was too cold by the time there was enough water for them to bathe. Janette (the owner) was apologetic when I mentioned the room’s water and lighting shortcomings to her and advised that she would get someone to fix them for us. She also advised me that the indoor heated swimming pool advertised in their literature no longer existed, having been converted to more guest rooms. During the day Janette told my wife that the plumber was working on the water and it should be fixed by the evening. However, by the end of the day, only the lights in the children’s room were fixed. The water was still only lukewarm and the bathroom was in semi-darkness.

On day three, there was only cold water. Extremely frustrated by this stage, I complained to the girl at reception who advised me that they had not called a plumber because it was Sunday. Janette had simply lied to my wife about getting the water supply fixed. We were moved to a different room with an independent water supply – it turned out that the St John’s water was also used by the Hatchers and for laundry at the property. The new room (Goldrich Suite) had frayed carpet, was quite musty and had about fifty dead flies on the windowsill and carpet in front of the window, as well as dead flies in the tatty lace hanging from the four-poster bed.

Apart from the general lack of cleanliness in the room, the bathroom had an extraction fan that, for some bizarre reason, was connected to a motion sensor instead of the light switch. This meant that the flies hovering around the room activated the fan throughout the night, preventing me from having a decent night’s sleep. What was most amusing, though, was that the fan turned itself OFF while I was in the shower! All this was in a bathroom that had no window and for which one needed to turn on the light in order to use it.

On day four I walked out of the room to find chicken manure on the doorstep. Now, I appreciate that this is a working farm, but guests who are paying city prices for accommodation should not have to face the stench or sight of fresh manure when they open their doors. Keeping the windows open was just not an option either, because of the smell.

I spoke to Colin, Janette’s husband, about the trials that we had endured to that point and requested a reduction in the room rate. Not unreasonably, I thought, given the lack of hot water and general lack of cleanliness. His response was that he could not afford to reduce the rate and that I had already been given a discount off the rack rate for the upgraded room. Yes! He was trying to charge me for the upgrade that they offered!

When I mentioned the lack of cleanliness in the Goldrich Suite, Colin’s response was “Are you complaining about that room as well?”, as though I was being difficult. Well, yes Colin, if you are charging people to stay on your property there are standards that your customers can reasonably expect. If you don’t meet these standards, expect complaints.

I get the impression that the Hatchers have simply bitten off more than they can chew with this establishment. For us, the product that they provided simply did not justify the extravagant prices that they charge. Hatcher’s Manor is not even close the four-star rating that they claim. I have stayed in better caravan parks for caravan park prices, and true five star hotels for Hatcher’s prices. What a joke! It makes “Fawlty Towers” look like the Ritz!
