Hatchers manor in Richmond Tasmania, offered us a relaxing, freindly, clean and warm place to base our Tasmainian adventure. The hosts Janette and Colin were very hospitable and freindly. They were always available with travel advice and tips. Staying on a working farm created a great environment for a our children to freely explore and enjoy. The on site restaurant provided excellent home cooked meals and a great selection of Australian wines. We will be recommending this place to other travellers.

My husband and I recently married at Hatchers Manor and have never experience such a beautiful time in our life.

I am a Sales and Marketing Manager of a multi million dollar company in Melbourne Australia, working 18 hours a day, the owners at Hatchers Manor organised our entire wedding on our behalf and it was the most amazing day and everything we could both wish for on our special day together.

Spending only 5 days at Hatchers Manor reminded me the importance of making time to enjoy life and family.

Relaxing and peaceful, enjoying the beautiful surroundings, the friendly staff, animals and the beauty of the Richmond township.

A beautiful and peaceful location to enjoy time with family and friends.

We stayed in the separate self contained cottage for three nights. Very comfortable and warm. With a small child we find it easier to stay in a house/cottage so we can do our own thing.

We did not eat in the restaurant as we had been to Richmond on several occassions before and were keen to eat at some of the places we knew would work for us with a 4 year old.

There was a washing machine in the cottage but no dryer so the owners were very happy to do our drying (at and extra cost). We could drop it off before we went to dinner and pick it up when we returned.

The owners were very friendly and went out of their way to help us.

My husband booked thinking we were a quick walk to Richmond itself. Fabulous if you are 2 adults but alittle too far with our daughter.

It is a beautiful place in an ideal location, it is however a little tired and need of some TLC. I did point out some things that needed attention to the owner and she was grateful for this information.

We had a great time. The dogs were friendly and we met some of the ponies. My daughter loved the bus in the reception area, and the the whole place is full of quirky unusual things. I can imagine that the gardens look amazing in spring and summer.

Sometime we all just need to chill out and not over think every thing and thats what we did during our stay. We relaxed and enjoyed one of Tasmania's most amazing villages.

After a few nights in Hobart, we decided to stay in Richmond as it is relatively close to both the city and the airport but is in a lovely rural setting.

Saw Hatcher’s Manor advertised on Wotif.com.au and thought the website impressive so decided to stay here.

We stayed in the St Johns Apartment, which is apart of the main house but has a separate entrance and you have to go up a steep narrow staircase to get to. Unfortunately, the staircase was a bit tricky to get suitcases up and down and tough going if you have the slightest mobility issues.

The main room was clean and tidy with a queen size bed, dining table, couch and TV, and a microwave and fridge. It had nice views of the valley with Shetland ponies and Clydesdale horses in the paddock behind the house.

The second bedroom was quite small (sort of built into the roof) with two single beds and the beds were clean and reasonably comfortable with electric blankets provided. The pillows were pretty thin so not that nice to sleep on.

I had the misfortune of being woken by the rooster at 4am but hey, it is the country so didn’t mind that much. The worst thing was the noisy pipes so I kept getting woken up by the sounds of (I assume) others having morning showers.
The wallpaper border was peeling in some places so looked a bit shabby and needs attention.

The major disappointment was the bathroom.
Although there was a spa bath, bath gel or bubble bath was not provided and there was also no soap. As someone has previously mentioned, the toilet paper was horrific.
If you were going to market your hotel as a 4 star property, I would (at a minimum) expect decent, soft toilet paper and soap.

There must be hot water issues too as only one of us hade the pleasure of a hot spa bath that night. My turn came and there was no more hot water so bad luck! Pretty bad if you deliberately booked a hotel excited by the idea of having a hot soak in the spa bath – not the luxurious experience it could have easily been.
I initially thought the bath was dirty, as there seemed to be little marks all over it – turned out to be dried drops of paint! Attention to detail not the strongest point here.

We had dinner in the restaurant at my companion’s insistence as the weather was bad and we thought it easy than having to drive to the pub.

Walked in as the lights were on but no one else there and no staff. There were instructions to call a number on the phone for service – no one answered the phone so we just stood and waited 5 minutes until thankfully Jeanette (the owner/operator) appeared. She seated us and then gave us a few minutes to look at the menus, which we soon discovered were different, and had numerous spelling mistakes (i.e. what is Beff Lasagna? I’m pretty sure it’s BEEF).

When we ordered and told her the menus were different, she said “someone said that to me the other day too”! Weird. Why wouldn’t you sort that out? It’s supposed to be a professional establishment! That just screams hokey.
My companion was keen to try several things on the menu and I wasn’t keen, as the restaurant seems quite disorganised and not adequately staffed. We had to wait quite awhile for each course and other guests came in during that time and stood there for a while like we did when we arrived – waiting for direction.

The food was okay – not great and although I didn’t expect much, I didn’t think it was worth the prices that they were charging. I guarantee that the pub was much better!
The best dish was the Apricot Crumble made with Apricots from the farm.

I reckon they should watch Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares for inspiration!
The key to making this a great little restaurant would be to have one, correctly spelled and simplified menu offering a limited number of traditional home-style dishes that are all time crowd pleasers. No one is expecting haute cuisine here – just cook tasty, uncomplicated food made from local produce and you can’t go wrong.

I also heard some other guests in the restaurant asking each other if they got to shower with hot water! Not what I wanted to hear but this prepared me for my cold bath.

This place has loads of potential!

If the owner/operators want people to have a satisfying stay here and thus recommend others, they need to pay more attention to details.

Guests like hot water, soft toilet paper, soap, soft pillows and decent food if you bother having a restaurant on site.

The Hatches Manor was a very pleasant stay. There were many friendly farm animals which loved attention from children. Our first night there we were told there was a platypus that lived in the river on the far end of the property. After three very early morning failed attempts to see anything in the water, we got lucky at dusk. A large platypus that was obviously not threatened by our presence swam approximately a meter from us. After a minute or so the curious creature returned to hunting. Probably a once in a life time experience for us!

Finally a place to stay where you can take your pet (dog in our case) and be able to wander around and just veg out. The clydesdale horses were, well, magnificent!! and the staff are so friendly and will chat to you and pass on info about Richmond that you won't find anywhere else. Just read about the rooster, umm, we didn't hear him but met him the next morning when we were invited to help feed the animals. Our room was to die for and if we had the time we'd have stayed a lot longer!!

What a fantastic place for kids. Had 5 days, Colin and Jeanette couldn't be more friendly and accommodating for our 3 boys aged 1,3 and 7. Kids cried when we left. They loved to run down to feed Larry (the fattest sheet in Tasmania) call past the kitchen to get vegetables to feed the little ponies. Got a great deal through check in and was upgraded to a 2 bedroom cottage on the property. Food and wine were great - again cooked great kids meals with fresh veg and they offered a free ice cream if they ate them all. Travelling with 3 small children is hard, but they made it so much easier by being very patient and friendly.
