“Good place to stay! Jan 2013”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

We stayed recently in Jan. It cost us $80 per night for 5 nights in the Attic Room which is so-called because there was a building below it and they built on top of it - not because its a shady attic. The room itself was very nice and had a very comfortable clean bed. Room was clean with a fridge, microwave, and basic amenities like towels, toilet paper, coffee, tea each of which was cleaned or restocked every day by the friendly Asian staff. Air conditioner and huge wall mounted television were very nice. We did not find the owners eccentric or leering as some ugly comments below suggest. We spoke to both Colin and Jeanette who were gracious hosts as was their nephew Brett, a very nice guy who made our stay a pleasure. Brett was very friendly and capable, gave us directions, asked permission to put new furniture into the room, even gave me a jump-start when my car battery failed. Thank you mate! The place is situated a 3 min drive out of the lovely town of Richmond amid a large Apricot orchard. From Richmond, Key roads lead out toward Launceston and Hobart making it a good central point to stay and depart from when exploring the West, East, South of Tas. (North a few hours drive!) The house is extraordinary to see, like a Gothic Disneyland but built just 20 years ago its truly unique. I'm not sure what the rate is when the room is not on special but this is a lovely and practical place to stay at. People who are hyper-sensitive to the idea that they must be waited on hand and foot and everything must be perfect and everyone must speak English or who can't do anything for themselves or who can't accept the potential for different experience when staying somewhere Different (rather than ALL hotel experiences being Identical!?) might not like it - it is a little bit quirky (which we liked) - but it was also clean, efficient, well-priced, well-placed and friendly. We loved it and will book there again if we return to Tas. Thanks Brett, Colin, Jeanette and Cleaning Staff. Kris + Rhona VIC

Overall, I found Hatcher's Manor a good clean place to stay, and its location in Richmond made it a good base to travel the South East and Northern parts of Tassie.

We met both Colin and Jeanette (the owners) and they were fantastic to deal with and listen to their commentary about the history of the "Manor" was fascinating. Jeanette was also great with our kids.

The animals roaming around the property was a welcome change to the hustle and bustle of the cities, and the kids had a great time feeding and petting them.

We had dinner in the restaurant one night, and the staff were pleasant and couldn't do enough for us. The food was good and the kids actually ate their dinner.

I know where we'll be staying next time. I would recommend others to stay here also.

From the web site this place looks great, so I booked a few nights. When we arrived down a very rough drive with weeds everywhere we found reception and rang the bell to be met by what looked like two Chinese back packers who talked in a foreign language to each other and then showed us to our room. It cost $160 per nigh, so we expected at least 4 star. Around the door was spider webs, the carpet was well worn, the lounge was extremely uncomfortable, there was no shower screen so everything got wet in the bathroom. On the first night we killed about 7 spiders, the next day we killed another 5 and the next morning 6 more. I think the owners have two dogs who yap at different times of the night. We were asleep the first night and at 10pm they started yapping. The Next night we got woken up again this time about 2am.
It had NO air-conditioning.
We didn't dare try their restaurant and were glad to get out of there. Faulty Towers? YES.
The next night we stayed at a B&B at Evendale for $115. and it was like the Hilton Hotel with everything we needed.

We'd booked a couple of nights at this place at the end of our Tasmania trip and after spending the previous week on Bruny Island. We arrived after a wonderful week at Sunset Beach and were looking forward to being closer to Hobart and in the middle of some beautiful countryside. At reception my wife was led up a narrow staircase to a room at the top when we'd booked a separate 'Large Cottage'. When my wife pointed out that we'd booked the cottage, the receptionist claimed that we hadn't! After reception had a 10-15 minute confab with another person who was not identified to me, it was revealed that after our booking was confirmed weeks prior, the 'Large Cotttage' had been left on the system and had been booked by another family who'd been there for the previous week. In effect, the place had been double-booked. They wanted us to stay in the other smaller place and the person who'd explained what had happened wanted us to give her our printed confirmation of booking, as she claimed she needed it to cancel the booking for the cottage with booking.com! We'd seen and heard enough and successfully booked accommodation at Somerset on the Pier as we drove back to Hobart from Richmond. These people need to get their act together, and systems in order, as this place looks like a Tassie version of Faulty Towers.

We stayed in the peak season and had expectations that for such a high room rate we would have received some service. Example being DVDs available at front desk but we weren't told and there was no in room info to supplement the zero help from the staff. We didn't get to meet the owners, just the staff.
Noise from people walking about in room above was more than we'd expect in a room 1/2 the price.
Other than that, spa was great and Richmond is always worth visiting.

Interesting place. Enjoyed our stay: lovely spot, handy to town, quiet, good value. Enjoyed meeting the owner, who, I think is great! She went out of her way to accommodate us and we really enjoyed meeting her. Unlike some others that have reviewed Hatcher's, I didn't find her overly 'eccentric', a judgement call anyway! I would visit again.

Room Tip: The fully self-contained rooms are a better bet for a multi-night stay.

We had a fabulous time at Hatcher's. The staff were friendly and the kids particularly enjoyed feeding the animals (alpacas, goat, horses, bunnies and most of all, Larry the sheep. They still miss him). Good facilities for a family - Col was happy to clean off the BBQ for us to use and there was a washing machine. A great family holiday, thanks!
