We stayed here three nights and enjoyed it a lot. Rooms were clean and service was very good. The owner is very helpful and friendly. A trip through the dunes including sandboarding was arranged on short notice at a fair price. Hotel is located very close to the beach, shops and restaurants. Overall this was very good value for money! No doubt we would choose this hotel again on next ocassion.

I tried emailing the Santa Maria Hostal but never received a reply after several attempts. That should have been my first clue.

We arrived at the hostal in January 2013 and inquired about the rates. It's obviously a modest establishment so I was stunned when the bored-looking owner said 250 soles ($100). We declined and walked away but he then came after us and said 200 soles, which we accepted (we were exhausted from a full day of traveling by minibus).

It turns out that the DAKAR races were going on nearby and that was the reason for higher room rates but he was clearly gouging people. It irritates me when hotel owners raise their rates at every opportunity without any explanation.

The owner not only looked bored but he also conveyed that he could care less. We asked for a quiet room and he put us in a room which was on the main strip and very noisy. The room was hot with no air conditioning.

There were only two thin bath towels in the room, so I went to the front desk and kindly asked for an extra towel. I was told that the rooms didn't have hand towels; I requested an additional bath towel to use as a hand towel or a bath mat, and he said he would bring one to the room but never did.

We signed up for the boat trip to Isla Ballestas through the hotel and showed up the next morning on time but we left late due to another family being late. But this wasn't communicated to us.

Our final disappointment came at breakfast. No eggs which is OK, but the coffee consisted of a package of instant Nescafé (which I nickname, No Es Cafe!). It's the only time on any trip that we've been given a package of instant coffee. Yuck! And since we had to catch the boat, we had no time to find a decent Peruvian coffee.

One last comment: What hotel owners like this one don't get is that travelers talk with each other. Within the next day, we were asked by three different people about a recommendation for a place to stay in Paracas, and my consistent comment was, well, let me tell you about a place you don't want to stay!

This hostel was booked by mystery peru, which includes in our package. Our room was clean and in good size, hot shower, bed and pillows were comfortable Friendly and helpful staff. Our breakfast was ok which includes bread, jam, butter, juices, and tea/ coffee. Good Wi-Fi coverage in our room. The location was awesome near El Chaco port where boat departs to Islas Ballestas. Lots of restaurants/bar nearby this hostel.

Perfectly adequate, but nothing special, good for the one or two nights tourist spend in this town. Smallish rooms, but lots of light from a inside courtyard, no wifi, just one computer.Save and secure, close to everything.

We had planned to stay 4 nights at Backpacker's House across the street, but after one night there, we moved over to Hostal Santa Maria. For $15 more per night, we had a large triple room with a private bath and a balcony overlooking the main square. The room was impeccably clean and we felt very safe. It was a bit noisy and bright at night, but that was easily fixed with earplugs. My only other minor complaints include the meager breakfast and the slow computer, but overall it was a great value for $30/night.

Basic accomodation but fine for one night. The hotels are clean. Hot shower. TV in each room. No views. There is a computer right at the entrance which you can use any time of the day. The location is perfect. Very close to where the boats depart to Isla Ballesta tours. The breakfast was very simple, not great. I slept very well and did not hear any noise. The hotel will take care of booking the boat tour for you. It was great.
There is a bar nearby that prepares the most amazing Passion fruit pisco sour. You have to try it!

Pros -
- Walking distance to everything including Cruz del Sur, ATM and all restaurants.
- Clean rooms.
- Smal balcony on an indoor courtyard.
- Hot pressured water.
- Comfy rooms.
- Able to use roof for washing and drying clothes.

Cons -
- Really bad Bfast. For 100soles per night I would have expected at least 1 free fried egg!!!
- No WIFI, just 1 computer in the main hotel building (since hotel has 2 buildings).
- Trips (Ballestas Islands and Paracas National Reserve) are higher in price than others. . . shop well around Paracas before buying these tours. We bought the tours from Emotion Peru Agency (in front of Santa Maria) (ask for Alfredo) and we had really good service.
- Light sleepers be aware since all noises all heard from the rooms!
- Rooms with no view.
