After a long bus ride, boat ride, dust and bumpy roads it was a relief to get to La Casa Amarilla. Lovely small hostal with an exceptionally friendly and accommodating staff. Excellent room, clean and tidy everywhere. Simple and good breakfast. We got breakfast even though we traveled as early as 5:00 o'clock a.m. With a small jaccuzzi in addition, I had given top marks.

We spent five days in Mompós, a hot, lazy, magical town that seems lost in time. And our stay at La Casa Amarilla made the experience truly unforgettable. From reading and relaxing on the rocking chairs, to breakfast in the charming kitchen next to colorful plants and flowers, to a brilliant sunset on the rooftop terrace, we enjoyed every moment. The staff were helpful and kind; they were available for any questions or concerns we had, and even helped us schedule an amazing boat tour on the Magdalena (highly recommend!). Mompós is a town everyone should visit once in their life -- and this hotel is the perfect backdrop to experience its charm. I hope to go back soon!

First, I would have to say that there is a very big difference between the private rooms which were very nice and upscale and the dorms which were very basic and spartan. I stayed in 2 different private rooms and they were both air conditioned (it was 40 C / 100 F) and very nice. The breakfast may have been a tad expensive but it too was very nice and I think worth it given the lack of options in the immediate area. Service was very good. Carmen was an upbeat, friendly and helpful lady. No English was spoken by anyone when I was there. Richard, the Canadian / Brit owner, was absent for the 2 days of my visit. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Highly suggest reserving an A/C room in advance. Mompos can be extremely hot and uncomfortable!

Thank you for your opinion. As we have been operating on the policy of an economically sustainable business we have as yet been unable to improve the dorms. I am happy to announce that as of May 2014 they are being changed into high quality private rooms.

Of all the places we visited in Columbia Dec-Jan 2013-14, Mompos sticks most in our memories: not simply the town and surroundings, but La Casa Amarilla too, in an ideal location and with a perfect atmosphere to reflect on and digest the town. Mompos is timeless, and not a place which necessarily strikes you immediately. It took us a few hours, post Cartagena, to start appreciating its hidden treasures, but we were soon regretting having to leave after only 3 days.
In our experience, La Casa Amarilla will orient you as much or as little as you want – boat trips (a must), silver filigree workshops, a tuk-tuk “tour” (very informal; very worthwhile) and more. The owner and staff went out of their way to help us acclimatise to make the most of our stay, as well as fix our onwards trip, which worked a treat.
LCA has 1-2 better rooms upstairs which cost somewhat more, but they allow a little more privacy and have some welcome finishing touches.
Note that – not surprisingly, given its location – fresh water is at a premium in Mompos: during our stay, we had one night (6pm-6am) with no running water. It’s a town issue (not the accommodation).
Breakfast is good, and is at one big table with fellow lodgers. The personally selected beans provide that vital and delicious cup of coffee you won’t find in the town until late afternoon. The same shaded courtyard area also offers a haven from the midday heat.
Nothing moves fast in Mompos: you need to relax to the tempo. LCA will get you in the groove.
Good for single travellers or couples. Some rooms might suit families.

I stayed for 2 nights in Mompox at The Casa Amarilla and only wished I’d had time to extend my stay!

Mompox itself is a tranquil, truly charming town that feels like a step in to the pages of Garcia Marquez, and the restored colonial mansion retains all of this charm (while still offering the mod cons that matter – eg. great kitchen, showers and wifi!). The elegant house has a peaceful location on the river just a few minutes’ walk from the main squares, making it a perfect base either to explore the town, or just to hang out and escape the heat in the hammocks and rocking chairs around the shaded garden or in the cool, spacious rooms. Breakfast (and the coffee) were delicious and the friendly staff also helped organise a boat tour of the wetlands (highly recommended for wildlife spotting and beautiful views) as well as onward transport and were always on hand to answer questions and help out.

Well worth the journey – both Mompox and La Casa Amarilla should be on the list for all visitors to Colombia!

I spent two nights at the Casa Amarilla. I stayed in room 3, which I think was one of the smaller suites. The Casa Amarilla is a very nice hotel, beautiful gardens, nice common areas, and the room was comfortable as well. There's a nice synergy there with fellow travelers. I found the bed to be comfortable, the bathroom was fine, though there was no hot water (the hot water tap didn't even turn on water). I can't recall if hot water was promised or not. Frankly, I didn't need it anyway. Wifi was strong and easy to use. Staff were as friendly and helpful as could be. Air conditioning was nice and fans were strong.

I'm somewhat sorry to say I didn't find Mompos itself to be the tranquil, enchanting place that many made it out to be. It's an arduous 8-9 hour journey from Cartagena, and though it is smaller, tranquil would not be the way I would describe it. The constant stream of motorcycles, scooters, and honks etc gave it a busy, bustling feel. I went out at 6:00 a.m. to try and see it when it was more quiet, and that helped a bit. I wanted to see the colonial architecture and churches, and two were cordoned off due to construction, so that was a disappointment. I did very much enjoy the cemetery, and bought two beautiful pieces of jewelry. It probably would have been an ideal day trip for me, but ended up taking three days -- too much, unfortunately. Some places resonate with some people, others do not. Still, if you make the journey, I can heartily recommend Casa Amarilla.

It's a home away from home. The free loaner bicycles are a great way to see the town and surroundings. Boat trip is awesome. Guests are great company and sources of info about the town and where to go next. The staff is great and are happy to help with your laundry. Breakfast is great. One drawback, there are a few mosquitoes and they can get into the bedrooms, but that's probably common to just about everywhere in Mompos. However, mosquito nets for the beds might be nice. Go up to the roof for a good view, go to the river at sunrise for good colors. Swimming across the river and back is fun but be prepared for a walk back upstream. There is a unique restaurant about 100 feet upstream, with a ten-foot high fork out front, you might have to knock and ask when it might be open. For good jewelry at a good price, see the guy at the entrance to the cemetery.

Room Tip: So far as I could tell, there are nice doubles / suites on the second floor, singles and dorm rooms...
