“21st Century Accommodations and Hospitality in 16th Century Colombia”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

Mompox, one of Colombia's two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is a rare destination in today's shrinking world; a truly unadulterated glimpse back into a realm of wonderfully preserved Colonial 16th century architecture and simpler times. As a small but intrepid family from Seattle, USA, we knew this trip would be exotic, but the best surprise was our home base of Casa Amarilla. Inn-Keepers, Richard and Alba, were deeply hospitable and efficient, ever responsive to all guests needs. What we loved most about our stay, aside from twilight on the terrace, feeding howler monkeys (and baby) outside the main door, and dancing in the new year with a great Cumbia band, was the ever-revolving door of truly interesting travelers. In our week we met everyone from the very well heeled of Colombian society to Germans who were circumnavigating the globe on their vintage bikes, to an activist Northern Irish couple who gave us pointers on their favorite vendors, to the professional class from Bogota, and of course, the requisite bright and youthful backpackers from around the globe. To ensure your richest experience while in Mompox, Casa Amarilla is the best stop and best value.

La Casa Amarilla is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the best of Mompos. It's situated right on the river so when you walk out of the door you're greeting by natural beauty and wildlife. Richard and Alba have lovingly restored the house and are extremely knowledgeable about everything there is to see and do in and around Mompos. The rooms are all set around a beautiful garden, and are furnished to a high standard, with ensuite bathrooms and very comfortable beds. It's a warm, welcoming and very relaxed haven where you'll feel at ease right away.

Richard and Alba have done a great job restoring this old colonial house and acting as the main source of tourist information in Mompos. Casa Amarilla offers several levels of accommodation from shared rooms to private ones. Richard kindly upgraded us to the best room in the place which has its own veranda and rooftop terrace, AC and a fan and TV. We werent able to access the wifi from there, however.

Mompos is a strange and interesting place and worth the (long) trip. Theres a decent chance you will be one of the only tourists in town. Take a boat tour of the river if you can and ask Richard about booking a dinner at El Fuerte next door.

If you are on holiday in Colombia you would be crazy not to make the trip to Mompos and to stay in Casa Amarilla. It's an old colonial house on the Rio Magdalena renovated to a very high standard by the UK-Colombian couple who own it, set in a town that evokes a sleepy, authentic Colombia in a way Cartagena never could.

I couldn't rate Casa Amarilla more highly - the staff are friendly and helpful, seeming to know everyone and everything in Mompos, and the setting is idyllic. Combine this with the incredible value for money of staying here, and it's a place I will rave about for many years to come.

Room Tip: Dorm rooms are very clean, but if you can afford it the private rooms exude rustic luxury.

I had a truly memorable time in Mompos and found La Casa Amarilla the perfect place to stay, recommending it most warmly to all fellow travellers: a quiet oasis, with kind staff, on the banks of the River Magdalena. I had a comfortable and blissfully quiet room with en suite bathroom near the back of the house, and felt very much at home whilst I rested from the rigours of a trip over several days from Bogotá. My thanks to the owners and to the staff for their kindness and generosity in helping me understand Mompos better; for putting me in touch with the excellent local guide and passionate defender of Mompos' heritage, Arnulfo; and for setting up the boat tour of the river banks of the River, and nearby ciénagas, which was magical, swimming in those crystalline waters of the ciénaga and returning in the setting sun to the sight of Mompos' houses lining the riverbank, in all their faded glory...

Mompos is a uniquely fascinating place and well worth the trip; it deserves its world heritage status and I would recommend Michael Jacobs' piece for the UK Telegraph on the town which captures the spirit of the place: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/southamerica/7709751/Mompox-Colombia-A-town-from-the-pages-of-Gabriel-Garcia-Marquez.html.

And do make yourselves at home at La Casa Amarilla: you won't regret it.

I had a great stay at this beautiful, tranquil guesthouse in front of the river in the sleepy town of Mompos. I stayed in a spotless dorm room in a comfortable bed. The location was perfect, a short walk from sights, shops and restaurants and the owners and their dog were very friendly! Hammocks in the courtyard, big airy rooms, a rooftop balcony and a fully equipped and clean kitchen. Easily one of the best guesthouses/hostels in Colombia. Highly Recommended!

I stayed at the Casa Amarilla for 3 nights. I treated myself to a comfortable private room with bathroom, A/C and fan and I just loved it.

The room was very spacious and tastefully furnished. The bed must have been one of the most comfortable ones I´ve ever slept in in a hotel. The bathroom was a little less spacious, but modern and stylish. The room, as the rest of the hostal, was impeccably clean. Considering the extremely high temperatures in Mompós, I opted for A/C, for which you have to pay a surcharge of +/- € 7,- and I certainly didn´t regret it. The room is also equipped with a powerful ceilling fan, which I used at night after I had cooled down the room with the A/C.

The hostal is equipped with a modern kitchen, so you could even prepare your own meals if you wanted or at least use the fridge for cold drinks (that you could enjoy either in a typical momposine rocking chair, a hammock or on the rooftop terrace.

The staff, especially the "manager" Carmen, are wonderful, just like all the rest of the momposinos. Any question you might have will be answered right away. And the river trip they offer with their captain Freddy is well worth the money! Don´t miss it. Wi-fi is available on the premisses.

Conclusion: The Casa Amarilla is a gorgeous place in a gorgeous little town. No need to spend more to be comfortable (and if you wish you could go to Doña Manuela, about 10 mins walk, pay COP $7000 and have a splash in their pool.
