This little restaurant makes some really great tacos. I had a shrimp and a mahi mahi taco. I can't decide which was best. Both were really delicious. The toppings are really fun and range from mild to really darn hot. They bring little bundles of cooked onion in tin foil as another little topping. The food is fresh and really good! Really nice staff too!!

Arrachera tacos are my favorite, but I tried the chile relleno tacos this time too and they were delish. Little packets of grilled onions and a great selection of salsas to top things off AND pineapple mint agua fresca to drink. Yum!

Loved the Mahi Mahi Tacos. Big huge ,"slabs" of fish with all the extras. A great twist in a classic. Large portions and fresh everything.

El Itacate is one-step above a taco-stand in the street. There is a storefront, but it's only for the kitchen. All of the tables are on the side of the street. What stands El Itacate apart, however, is its chef/owner Jorge, who has invented creative twists on reliable Mexican-standbys. Pertinent to me, a vegetarian, is that its menu prominently featured a vegetarian section (the menu is posted or painted prominently on the wall, easily seen from the street, and it was this vegetarian designation that inspired my first visit). For instance, Jorge features a "Quesadilla Jamiaca" -- quesadilla with hibiscus flowers. You won't find that in any ordinary run-of-the-mill restaurant, even when there are inside tables! He also has a mushroom and garlic quesadilla, which was my favorite, but has a tendency to sell out. Among other items on the vegetarian menu were a chile relleno. This is not a "traditional" Chile Relleno that one might find in a Mexican restaurant north of the border. It was a small chile, stuffed with eggplant, topped with cheese (not stuffed with cheese), and served in a corn or flour tortilla. On another visit, I tried the guacamole. The guacamole was plentiful and had a wonderful consistency. It could have had more body, however. It was the most expensive thing I've ever ordered at El Itacate, at 40 pesos ($3.25). Vegetarian tacos or quesadillas are 25 pesos ($2).
For meat and fish eaters, there is the traditional carne asadas, fish tacos, carnitas and all of that jazz. For every dish, they bring two trays of condiments and salsas for patrons to enhance their taco experience. These meat alternatives are 30 pesos ($2.40). Portions aren't huge -- traditional sizes -- though Jorge is quite generous with stuffing the toppings and piling on the cheese. This not for anyone on a strict diet.

I liked that Jorge cooks on a grill directly in front of everyone for all to see.

All of it was good. I can't say that this was mind-blowing, but it was certainly better than average, much more creative than what one would find at other comparable alternatives (hibiscus flowers, mushrooms and garlic, chile stuffed with eggplant), and grading on a curve -- particularly with the limited and repetitive options of Sayulita -- it is worth a visit.

All of the servers are nice and personable. My only reservation - and the reason for the 4 star rating -- is that the food tends towards the greasy side.

Added plus: Open 'till midnight everyday.

Closed mid-August until mid-October.

Cash only.
