The Royalton is well located opposite of Parque Céspedes in the center of town in an area of well maintained buildings. I didn't expect too much upon arrival considering this hotel is only labelled as 2 star on many sites but from what I gathered, recent renovations have elevated this edificio into the 3 star category. I was quite impressed with the room and furnishings even though it was not large. There is no pool but a large upstairs deck for sunning and an in-house restaurant.
The staff were gracious but at times a bit out-of-the-know about certain things seeing as Bayamo is not a huge tourist destination. The towns-folk almost seemed too quiet for Cubans and I did not feel any sort of sense of being hustled wherever I lurked around.
The streets surrounding the park and the boulevard beyond, are blocked and traffic-free making for a quiet pedestrian-walkway atmosphere with a few shops, restaurants, bars, and even a cinema in the vicinity. At any given moment there are people sweeping the streets and square making for an almost perfect picture/postcard look that is not always equated with many parts of Cuba.
A great place to spend a few relaxing days but a week or more might be too much for some who seek a more adventurous action-filled environment. One of those places that is unique in Cuba for it's own ways.
A word of caution is that there is no place in town to exchange money on a Sunday which can make a hungry tourist almost like a beggar of sorts. Kind of funny, if you can imagine. If it weren't for the grace of a casa owner and a fellow tourist, it might have been a long uninteresting night.
I hope to return soon......
