This walled village has amazing view to Alentejo region and the valley of Guadiana river... Castle itself has beautiful walls and approach to it requires you to be able to walk uphill, though amazing narrow streets, small shops and restaurants... It's an amazing place to visit for a day trip... However, I've noticed there you can find a place to stay overnight also which must be amazing, especially in ambient like that! The castle is not that big. It's quite a steep open iron stair case to get up to the battlements but it's worth it for the view. I wouldn't make a special journey to Monsaraz to visit the castle but it's a nice place to stop over if you've been staying in a city ( in our case Evora) and want a bit of fresh air. It's quite touristy though.

An amazing trip back in time. If you are in the area, it's worth the time to go see it. There are lots of hills and cobblestone streets. The views are amazing.

Off the beaten tourist route. Didn't see many tour buses. Quiet village with a really spiritual or ghostly feeling. Castle was under renovation during our visit.

and the drive through the countryside to get here was wonderful. This town has a much more relaxed atmosphere (probably due to fewer tourists) which was a nice change of pace. Wonderful craft shops with friendly shopkeepers. The walls and viewpoints were lovely. Nice to just wander the town at a leisurely pace.

We went to Monsaraz as a tip from a Portuguese friend and we loved it. It’sa low profile place with less tourists than average.
The castle is in very good condition and the view up there is stunning.
City is very charming and we could buy some really beautiful handcrafted souvenirs fair priced.
Local food is delicious!

This is not a big castle but it's absolutely fun to climb all around and get the views of the surroundings from different vantage points. It is quite popular at sunset time. But after night falls, I have the entire castle to myself. So glad I am spending the night inside the village. The castle is lighted on the outside but not inside. It is also free to enter.

We were up here at sunset, and that was a great time to be here! Easy climb up. Best to get down before it’s too dark though as the upper areas are not well lit. Lovely old town to walk through as well.

Monsaraz (Alentejo) was my favourite village in Portugal. I travelled during 30 days to absolutely all regions in Portugal. Monsaraz is a totally amazing place! It‘s on top of a mountain, and you get stunning views from wherever you look. The village itself is a dream made of white walls and stone walls. Every corner is very well taken care of, it‘s very neat, very clean and full of atmosphere. In summer there are flowers everywhere, and it was one of the places I saw in Portugal from where I just did not want to go away anymore, because I adored it!
There are some very pretty handicraft shops, and among other things they sell very beautiful, colourful ceramic plates.
All in all, I just could not get enough strolling around there and taking photos. It is a place that should not be missed!

By the way, it is similar to Marvão. Both villages are on top of a hill, both villages have these white and lovely houses. I loved both, but in my opinion Monsaraz is better taken care of, it is more accessible.
