We were staying in Casa Pinto (see our separate review on this) which is the next property along from Casa do Forno. We decided to take a walk around the village and checkout the several restaurants that we had noticed earlier. This was at 7pm, after the heat of the day (37 degrees and not a breath of wind) had subsided. To our surprise we could not find any of them open and were about to return to Casa Pinto when we noticed that the door to do Forno was open. The doorway is on a steep slope and did not look particularly inviting but, beginning to get hungary, we ventured in. Once inside we walked down several sets of steps and arrived in a most charming dining room. The staff greeted us cordially and made us feel very welcome. Several other people started to arrive and soon there was the gentle hubub of happy contented diners. The service was efficient without being over attentive and the food served promptly was most enjoyable. The waiter also gave good advise on a local wine that complimented our food and was very reasonably priced. Our table was immediately next to French windows that lead on to a terrace but unfortunately it was not in use. As we ate we watched the sun sink down below the horizon and the star filled night sky appear. Like everything in Monsaraz Casa do Forno is special, different and leaves you with a satisfied feeling. We can't wait to return.
