We stayed at Hermann Hill once before for an overnight at the cabins. It was a great experience. This time, we tried the inn and it was even better than I expected. I have never wanted to stay at a bed and breakfast but Hermann Hill doesn't really fit that mold. It is upscale lodging and we are by no means wealthy, but there are various affordable pricing options. We just returned from two nights during the week which cost a lot less than a weekend stay. Due to many family illnesses and obligations, and working full time, my husband and I decided to spend our anniversary here, close to home, but far away from reality. The two nights we could spare and afford were well worth the price. I love the history of this place, built by a couple who made their dream come true even though absolutely no one thought they would be successful. Hermann Hill continues to expand and improve. The website is excellent. Everything you might want to know is on the site. I especially liked the video tours. We ended up in Seyval, a premium hot tub room which features a sitting room. What we found was exactly as portrayed in the video tour and we were very glad we stayed there. You can have as much privacy or interaction as you like. We just wanted the privacy to relax and find some peace. Even though the inn was full, we only saw a couple of other guests as we went in and out of the building. It was very quiet for such a busy place . On arrival, we were escorted to our room where everything was explained. I knew from the website that the hot tub and jacuzzi were drained and cleaned before every new guest, and that was stressed during our tour. Our guide showed us how everything worked, and she was not happy with the length of time it took the fireplace to light. We thought it would probably be ok, but as we were unloading our bags, someone was sent to fix it immediately and it was in great working order in a very short time. OK was not good enough, and we were impressed by that. We were asked if we would like a glass of wine, and before long we had a welcome tray brought to our room with fresh bread, cheese, grapes, and our wine. There was a great booklet of directions for the room and info on the town, restaurants, etc. There is a map if you are so inclined to take the three mile path that begins at the Inn. There is a rotating menu to fill out for your breakfast choices...and there are many choices. We chose to have ours brought to our room, but you can also eat in the dining room. Comfortable bed, fireplace, heated towel racks, slippers and warm robes provided. There is a cutting board, knife, wine glasses, wine opener, toiletries and many other extras provided. The hot tub room had a free standing waterfall shower, a large hot tub with numerous jets and lights, a huge sliding glass door to let in the outside air, and a linear fireplace with colored lights for ambience. It is very private and has quite a view. There is an outdoor patio where you can enjoy a glass of wine or your breakfast. I was surprised at the gourmet breakfast. You can even pick a Bloody Mary or Mimosa to start off your morning. Breakfast was delivered piping hot to our room at the time we requested. At night, a discreet knock lets you know ice cream and homemade cookies are outside your door. I am not used to being waited on, but I certainly felt pampered. No matter how many amenities a place has though, it is only as good as the staff. Everyone we met who worked at Hermann Hill seemed to go out of their way to make sure you enjoyed your stay. That first impression means a lot. So now we are back to reality but refreshed and glad we took the time to take care of ourselves. Whether you are newly married, need a break, or have been married many years like us, I think you will find Hermann Hill well worth a visit.

Wow! Thank you so very much for taking the time to write a review with so much detail about our approach to taking care of our guests. And yes, it’s also true that only with a huge staff of dedicated people can we deliver on that upscale experience expectation. There seems to be somewhat of a season for breakfast delivery to the rooms and as we move toward winter it’s very common to have 16 trays set up in the kitchen to deliver breakfast to all eight rooms at the time designated by our guests- 9:15, 9:30, 9:45, and 10:00 AM.

We stayed here for our anniversary...in making the reservation, the staff set our expectations high..our experience was one of over-promising and under-delivering. First, we ran into a snag when we booked a cottage that, as it later turned out, was unavailable (even though the website showed it as available and we booked over the phone with hotel staff who said it was available). We ended up staying in a room at the lodge, rather than a cottage. The friendly front desk person told us that guests in the lodge were "pampered."

Pampering is of course in they eye of the beholder. While we didnt' need to be pampered, one of us has severe food allergies (gluten, lactose) and asked if the staff could a) accommodate when it came to breakfast (and the much-touted dessert) and b) recommend some restaurants. The desk person assured me they could accommodate and would have have waiting for me on arrival a list of recommended restaurants that could accommodate my allergies. Neither proved to be true - no list on arrival (and only two restaurants in town that could truly accommodate my allergies, both of which were good, by the way - see our related review of the Black Walnut Bistro). On the first night, staff said they were "looking for some gluten free cookie mix" because they had "run out" - in the end, no gluten free dessert ever materialized on either night of our stay. Additionally, my confidence that breakfast was truly gluten free was shattered when the person delivering it said "I guess the potato casserole is gluten free...the cereal mixed in it is corn flakes but I'm not sure what else is in there."

Last, the room we stayed in is a bit dated - as an example, it has an old "big box" (not flat panel) TV and a VCR/DVD player. We wanted to watch a move, but we were delayed because it took staff an hour to get it to work. They did kindly give us a $20 gift certificate for the trouble, but the point is that the TV and other items need updating.

We thank you for this well written and objective review of your experiences at our Inn. You have made several excellent points and have given us an opportunity to address and correct these important issues. Your review indicates that even prior to the reservation date we failed to exceed your expectations. Our entire Hermann Hill staff apologizes for our failure. We always consider a complaint to be a gift and an opportunity for improvement. We had already removed the front desk person who communicated with you prior to learning about these issues because she failed to meet our customer service standards. We have also taken immediate steps to correct the unfortunate actions of our employees that impacted your stay.

We have educated our service staff regarding special dietary needs and foods so they may better serve and respond to guest needs and inquiries. Currently, we deliver gluten free breakfasts to our guests daily both at the Vineyard Inn & Spa and Riverbluff Honeymoon Cottages. We also think it’s a great idea to offer gluten free cookies and cereal. Our chef is preparing samples for our guests to evaluate and we hope to add these items quickly to the gluten free muffins and gluten free breakfast entrees we serve daily upon request. Here is a link to our three days of current Inn breakfast choices: http://www.hermannhill.com/hermann-hill-breakfast-menu.html

We are also sorry that neither of the two TV’s in the Vidal guestroom were flat screens. We replaced one with a flat screen the day after you departed. Hermann Hill currently has 50 flat screen TVs in our Vineyard Inn & Spa and Riverbluff Honeymoon Cottages and 3 traditional TV sets. We will proceed immediately to replace the three remaining traditional TV sets.

We’re glad you had good Hermann dining experiences and hope our in-room notebooks with all local restaurant menus and restaurant video helped with your dining choices. Your criticisms are constructive and valuable to us. Nearly all the solutions have been implemented. We want to personally thank you for bringing these things to our attention. We hope you will return to Hermann Hill in the near future and tell us how we’ve done.

My husband and I recently treated our French friends to a stay at the Hermann Hill Inn. Its setting in the vineyards set the mood for the stay. Seeing our names on a welcome sign made us feel at home. After we enjoyed our welcoming wine, we retreated to our separate rooms to cozy up by the fireplaces and soak in the jacuzzis. The rooms were quiet; the beds, comfy. Breakfast was served ensuite. Service was unobtrusive and impeccable. Our friends said, "We could live here." High praise from world travelers who know vineyards and inns.

High praise indeed from such world travelers! Thank you very much! It seems like we are getting more international travelers all the time and it’s always interesting to have them critique our operations and amenities. We’ve just moved our welcome sign with guests names from the entry hall to a protected location just outside the front door and we’ve received many more positive comments about guests seeing their name prior to entering the Inn.

Fantastic bed and breakfast. Actually breaks the paradigm of the typical bed-and-breakfast. Wish we could've stayed several days and thoroughly enjoy the relaxing in romantic setting! Beautiful location. Stunning views. Gorgeous sunrise! Terrific service and wonderful food.

Seeing a sunrise with fog obscuring the town is always special! Thank you for the review. Being able to build new from the ground up allowed us to include the amenities that break the paradigm of Grandma’s old house. We chose this location because we knew that most of our guests would enjoy the views to the east overlooking the town while watching the sun rise.

I went to Hermann Hill to relax and rejuvinate. The cottage was wonderful, the food good, the Missouri River and hot tub devine, but I was really missing my "kids". I was honored to be able to play and take Lewis and Clarke for walks. Wow, to think that I was able to "borrow" the kids so I did not feel so homesick, that was really above and beyond, As a hospice nurse, I like to get away for a few days to unwind...Heramnn Hill is the prefect place to do that!

Room Tip: If you get up early, the cottages offer wonderful sunrise and sunset views from the deck. They are v...

We have stayed at the Hermann Hill cottages and the Inn. They both are first class rooms. They think of extras that I didn't even think of. Great rooms and wonderful people running it. I would recommend it if you want first class. :-)

After staying at Hermann Hill for business a couple of years ago, I thought then... if anyone special ever comes into my life, this is where I will propose. This past weekend on 8/18/12 I did just that. Hermann Hill offered the most beautiful accommodations and setting we could ask for. Upon our arrival we had an awesome couples massage. The room was spectacular and it felt like home immediately. Terry and Peggy and their staff made sure everything was perfect. Oh, and by the way... she said YES! We will be back same time next year!

Room Tip: The cabins offer privacy and luxury!
