An excellent attraction for the whole family. Kids will be very entertained and learn a lot too. DO NOT miss the dog show, it is the highlight of the day. It is a bit out of the way but worth the drive.

This is such a great place to visit. First off, it is FREE! you may want to call ahead of time to make sure they are open, on rare occasions they close the place down for dog shows. They filmed an ESPN dog sports contest, so sometimes they close it off. But the other 95% of the time you can get in with no problems. What is really cool about this place is that it is not very crowded. There are usually only about 50-150 people in the place at a time because it is somewhat off the beaten path. It's in the dinky town of Grey Summit, MO which by all appearances has about a population of about 75 people. 95% of the time you can get in with no problems if there is no event. What is really cool about this place is that it is not very crowded. There are usually only about 50-150 people in the place at whole time. They have a cafe on site that serves burgers, fries, etc. THe place is fully funded by Nestle Purina.

Want to see a diving dog, milk a cow, pet a sheep, or see some sweet beasties wanting a little loving? Well, if yes, Purina Farms might be your ticket. It's free, but you need to call ahead for reservations to make sure you can get in during the crowded summer months. The majority of the farm you probably won't tour, but there is plenty around the visitor's center to keep you occupied for at least a couple of hours.

If at all possible, try to be there at the opening, around 9-9:30 am, depending on the season. The main reason is it will be cooler, and two of the things kids like...the milking of the cow (at 10:30 am) and the dog show (at 11 a.m.) will be close together. Otherwise, it will be in the afternoon, some two hours apart.

The visitors center provides an overview of how Purina makes its animal foods with hands-on, and kid-friendly activities, along with historic photos, and a movie that talks about the farm. Once across the way to a barn, there are games and animals to pet, ranging from pigs and rabbits, to horses, cows and sheep. The cow milking demonstration allows kids to come up and take a turn at milking a cow.

Just up from the barn is the pet house, where you will find dogs and cats that can be touched. Many of these are rescued animals from abusive homes, or just abandoned on roadsides. The dog show takes place out back, and features a variety of things the canines can do, including diving after a frisbee. Hopefully you will see more than just the diving show. When I was there, it was 105 degrees in the shade, and the astroturf the dogs were on was about 125, so only the diving show was done. Very entertaining, nonetheless.

Purina Farms will take less than three hours to see, even if you include the wagon ride they have. It's west of Six Flags, which means it's about 45 minutes from downtown St. Louis. Certainly worth a stop, especially if your kids like animals.

It's fun to get close to the farm animals. We enjoyed the dog show but wish it had lasted longer

Not overly advertised, and we came across it about an hour west of St. Louis, but had one of the best times of my vacation! Anyone who loves dogs, cats, and farm animals, or who has children must stop here and spend a day. And there's no admission fee!
