There's nothing wrong with Joe Boccardi's that a week with Gordon Ramsay wouldn't fix - that is to say, everything is currently wrong with the place.

The service is subpar. Waitstaff stood around gossiping with each other while cleaning silverware and arguing about who was covering which table. Our group was told that one gal would be with us; suddenly, another gal hopped in and took our drinks instead (which they proceeded to bicker about right in front of us). Having the checkout in the middle of the diners is also a thumbs down. Added to the lack of privacy and immersion was the fact that everyone from the back of the house stuck their heads out to peer at the diners. It was very unnerving.

And the food ... the food! The pizza was okay, but the bread they served for starters tasted bland and store-bought. Salads were so-so; and anyone could make better pasta dishes at home. But the real kicker is the Roast Beef with Provel that was plated. Astonishingly bad. The bread was soggy and mushed on the plate. The roast beef was covered with what tasted like mushroom gravy (hence the state of the bread). This in an Italian restaurant, and for the prices they charge!

To cork it, the waitress never even commented on my mostly untouched sandwich. She just mutely dumped unasked-for takeout boxes in front of my husband. Absolute waste of a meal.

Food was mostly frozen, fried, and un-fresh. Pizza tasted like a frozen pizza from the grocery store. Chicken Mario was breaded and deep fried frozen chicken. Yuk. Beer selection is very limited. St. Louis is known for good Italian food. Apparently that hasn't rubbed off on Eureka yet.

My husband and I have enjoyed the food at Joe Boccardi's in Eureka since he opened the doors over 40 years ago. From the first pizza out of the postage stamp sized carry-out space till today with the expanded dining space and extensive menu! Joe's pizza remains the authentic St. Louis style made popular by the many Italian immigrant restaurant owners on The Hill, and you can get wonderful pasta dishes that include new items as well as his signature dishes! And more often than not, Joe and Margaret will come out from the kitchen to greet guests at their tables.

I love Italian food! Living in St. Louis, we are spoiled. Everyone wants to eat on "The Hill," and now I understand why. My family was staying in a nearby hotel, so we decided to try Joe Boccardi's. We were there at 6pm on the first nice saturday of the year. We made a reservation and our table was ready the moment we walked in. The place was packed with poeple! Everyone I had talked to said the pizza was great, which most of the family decided to order. It wasn't anything special, normal thin crust pizza. The rest of the family went with the classic Spaghetti and Meatballs. It was inedible. The meatballs are very dense and bland, everyone took one bite and decided not to finsh the,. The marinara sauce was oily and bland. Everyone ended up sharing the pizza. Next time family is in town, I will remind them why The Hill is the place to go.
