“A little above average KOA”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

Located 30 mi. West of St. Louis. Sites are flat, but spread out. Staff was friendly and accommodating. No cable, and with antenna we only picked up 3 channels. Showers are adequate, typical of KOA. Close to train track, which does echo through the adjacent canyon. One problem we had was the long distance from downtown St. Louis, however there is quite a lot of shopping and restaurants in closer proximity. Budweiser brewery tour is free and a must do, with ample free parking.

The managers were unusually nice. The female made home baked chocolate chip cookies for everyone and even delivered them to our caboose. They were delicious. The caboose was from Route 66. My husband loves trains, so this was a surprise for him. They said the new mattress had just arrived. It was comfy. The only negative was that since the caboose is not very wide, it was not big enough for both of us and my husband had a rather uncomfortable sleeping night. Next time we would choose a cabin. We suggested putting in an alarm clock, and they took my husband's suggestion seriously. It would also be nice to have a microwave. The caboose came with a jacuzzi which was a very nice touch. The pool was very nice to use. It was quiet. We even enjoyed hearing the trains go by several times on the other side of the road, but it did not keep us up.
One could not ask for more friendly or attentive managers.

Room Tip: We normally book cabins with a bathroom away from noise and are always happy with the KOA Cabins sin...

We booked online without problem and found the site easily – it is well signposted from the I44. Our check-in was very friendly and welcoming with good advice being given to our questions about getting back into St Louis the next day (hard by public transport so better to drive). We were given a pitch at the back of this spacious camp (and escorted to it) which was easy to drive into, gravel (so no mud) with grass around it. Although one can hear the I44, it is sufficiently far away not to be a nuisance and the number of trains on the nearby train track seems to be small and so their noise also was not a problem. The toilets are ok but nothing brilliant, there is an RV store which does not stock much, wifi was good in the morning and late afternoon but became poor at peak usage times in the evening, the rate charged was reasonable. We have no complaints and can recommend it to others.

After checking in, even though the campground was not full, we were put all the way in the back on a dirt road (the more paved ones were towards the front), of course it poured and it was pure mud even where we had to park our truck. I never went into the restrooms. The pool was clean and shallow which is good if you have little ones. But my little one wasn't able to ride his bike due to the dirt road. The staff was friendly but very understaffed had to wait to check-in. Completely overpriced for a KOA, I think since its very close to Six Flags. You are very close to the railroad tracks and the interstate.

Room Tip: There was a Jellystone Campground on the other side of the interstate, should of checked it out.

If you are looking for tent spots for a quick one night stay I would recommend this place. Tent spots are located next to a creek with large shade trees and cool rock formations. The staff is friendly and even brought us a large fire ring and firewood (as we were a large group). Plenty of space for kids to have fun

I would never stay here again & wouldn't recommend anyone else to either. First of all, they only cleaned the bathrooms once a day in the late mornings. By evenings, the bathrooms were filthy. The one night none of the bathroom stalls were even remotely usable & when I asked them to clean them, all they did was flush them. And in addition to that, there were train tracks right across the road & we heard the train all night long! We didn't get any sleep.
Also, they had a nice enough laundry room, but the door said it closed at 7 pm. However, the paper they gave us said it closed at 8 or 9. Either way, usually laundry rooms are open 24 hours in a campground - especially since the bathrooms/laundry room would be the only storm shelter they had. They also kicked us out of the pool when it started sprinkling. Now I oculd understand them doing it if it was raining hard or lightening, but it was barely a light rain.

Don't stay here.

If you can handle the noise here—freight rail and interstate—you'll probably be ok. (Especially if you can pretend that the interstate is the surf rolling in.) If you're in a tent, like we were, you'll be as far as you can get from the bathrooms and showers. Think a city block or two. The tent sites were pretty good. A couple even back up onto a pleasant looking creek.

On the up side, the staff was good. The location would have been a knock-out had we been going to Six Flags, and it's manageable for general St. Louis sightseeing. (It's not like you can camp four blocks from downtown big city anyway.)
