We had dinner here (birthday celebration for a friend). Hubby and I had the salmon, steak, mashed potatoes, asparagus, crab bisque, Crème Brûlée, cheesecake w/ strawberry sauce and white wine. I am not sure of the prices as everyone's dinner (about 24-26 ppl) it was taken care of by the hostess of the celebration. We had a prefixed menu w/ 3 to 4 different items to choose from the Starters to the desserts. Everything was delicious. The service was excellent. We all had a great time w/ no complaints or ppl sending back plates. Whew! :-)

I'm not sure how long they can afford to do this, but J. Gilbert's offers 1/2 price wines (under $100) on Sunday nights. Their wines are already well priced, so you can really enjoy a nice bottle for less than retail! From beginning to end, the service was seamless. Our party of 4 enjoyed a entrees from the prix fixe menu -- both seafood and steak -- and relaxed for 2 hours over our exceptional meal and tasty wine. I highly recommend it.

This was our first time to visit J. Gilbert's but it will not be our last. We joined friends who have been here before and know the menu. Our waiter Jason was on top of the service all night, friendly, knowledgeable and just the right amount of attention. My wife had salmon on the plank and would not share it with me :(. Very comfortable seating and you can visit with friends. Nice place

We visited J Gilberts for the first time last night. It was a Friday night and we had reservations for 7:00.
Service: Great service, friendly greeting, seated promptly, and our server was spot on, took great care of us.
Atmosphere: Really good atmosphere, lively but not loud, very comfortable seating, large roaring fireplace kept the restaurant cozy, dark woods and leather - perfect steak house decor.
Food: Very good. Crab bisque was outstanding, crab cake was above average for St. Louis, lots of crab, little filling and delicious dipping sauce. Their signature Manhattan was really good with wonderful black cherry garnish. We both had the fillet - one with lobster tail, brussel sprouts and baked potato, one with crab cake, grilled asparagus and au gratin potatoes. High quality ingredients, but too strong on the mesquite flavors. On the steak it was okay, but it really hurt the delicate flavor of the lobster and asparagus. Au gratin potatoes were great, wonderful flavors.
Price: I had one drink, hubby two, we shared the bisque as an appetizer and two dinners as described. Bill with tax and tip $170, a bit pricey in our opinion.
Will we go back - probably not. Didn't like the heavy mesquite flavoring, and not a great value for the price.
