The Wagon Wheel Motel in Cuba, MO, is one of the best - if not the best - motel that one will come across while doing route 66.

The Motel is recently renovated, the rooms are beautiful and elegantly created while some offer jacuzzi tubs to help you relax from the long hours of driving.

From the hotel sign, the beautiful gardens and the rooms to the reception which also serves as a small store with high quality memorabilia the Wagon Wheel Motel is a must stay place.

For local residents in Cuba, Missouri, the Wagon Wheel Motel still has a bad reputation because it used to be pretty run-down. But it's been recently renovated, and I had a good experience staying here. My room was small, but it was clean and cozy - and what I could hope for on my Route 66 vacation.

Probably the best reason to stay here, however, is the town of Cuba, Missouri. As I traveled all of Route 66 from Chicago to L.A., I found much of Missouri to be really depressing and unwelcome to visitors. Cuba was an exception, with its beautiful murals that adorn the town - and the world's largest Rocking Chair a few miles to the west.

Room Tip: Stay in the smaller rooms - they're cheaper

I had the pleasure of staying at The Wagon Wheel on a recent business trip down Route 66. Connie has done a fantastic job of completely gutting the rooms and bringing them back to 'better than new' status. Not just a quick paint job - she gutted the place and installed high end amenities! Great job and high marks to Connie and her staff.

Stayed there on a trip through the Mid West. The rooms were small, but clean and tidy. The staff was nice and helpful. The rooms could need some more hooks to hang jackets etc., but otherwise ok. Be aware that the railroad tracks are only one block away. It gets quite load when a train passes.

We didn't arrive until after 9 pm, and the owner had to arrange for someone to work the desk until we arrived; showing up late without arrangements might be a problem.

This motel dates to back before WWII, and previous owners had let it run down and received bad reviews. The new owner has remodeled the rooms and they are absolutely spotless, with flat screen TV and modern showers. The exteriors are an interesting stone construction.

The only things some people might dislike are:
Rooms are really tiny, people must have been a lot smaller back then. But no problem for our overnight stay.
Our room had no coat rack or hooks, I ended up hanging my pants on the curtain rod.
No restaurant on site. That worked our great for us, we didn't need dinner and next morning were directed to a cafe/bakery a few blocks away by the tracks. There, all 3 couples had the best breakfast of our lives! My ham & cheese omlet must have used 5 eggs and an entire pig. Deliscious!

Cuba is a small town with about a dozen lage murals on buildings around town, interesting and pretty. Lots of Rt 66 stuff to drive by.

We'll be back!
