Yeranda at Barrington Tops
Reviewed July 7, 2013

Colin and I have just spent a wonderful few days at Yeranda in the cottage “ Kalimna”
There is lots of hot water and a good shower. The bed is very comfortable as are the lounge seats.
The kitchen is truly fully equipped, even to an apron, which is great for apron lovers like me. Books and jigsaw puzzles are even provided for your entertainment.
But, most of all we loved the quiet and solitude, listening to the sounds of the bush – birds singing and splashing in the bird bath, frogs, butterflies fluttering by and jenny wrens hopping around your feet. A couple of currawongs came along to check us out. A walk in the bush and seeing a kangaroo hopping by is worth heaps. But that is not all. In the quiet of the night the shine of a possums eyes as he sat on the veranda rail looking back at us inside.
Yes, a couple of times the peace was broken by the sound of an air force jet overhead. Was he on his way to Brisbane to pick up his lunch? We wonder, but it really didn’t spoil the ambience of Yerenda. This was our second visit, all be it 17 years since the first.
So, Kevin and Ros get a great big thanks from us.
Barbara

My partner had suggested a stay in the Barrington Tops area so we went to the Visitor's Centre in Dungog. I found a number of brochures including the one for Yeranda, the site for the cottages named Pindari, Kalimna and Elouera. We selected this site out of all the brochures and the Centre put us in contact with Ros and we made a 2 night booking for Elouera. It was absolutely perfect for us - so much so we booked another 3 night stay straight away for the next weekend! And so romantic, I wrote this in response:

Elouera

Elouera, what a beautiful and magical place
So full of serenity and peace with a subtle, spiritual grace
And so to you, dear visitor, I say Beware!
For you won’t leave here the same
The love that you bring here
Will soon burgeon apace
And what starts with a spark
Will soon become bright flame

Thank you Kevin and Ros
For the love you put into creating the space is so evident
And your sharing it with us is very much appreciated.

As Arnie Schwarznegger once said, “I (we) will be back!”

Peter and Arja have to be the guests who have returned to us the quickest for their second stay! New record holders in the Yeranda book of Records. It was lovely to meet these new guests who originate from New Zealand and Finland and who have a great love for our bush land. We look forward to welcoming them back again when Peter returns from the Pilbara for more R & R!!! Thanks Peter for a lovely poem.

Shhh I have a little secret but I am very reluctant to share!
If you are attached to your smart phone, tablet, laptop and very busy lifestyle this place isn't for you, because this little piece of heaven on earth that I have stumbled upon, is where you literally have to SWITCH OFF!
You don't have a choice as there is no phone or internet access and one is reliant on solar and gas appliances.
I arrived to a very warm welcome from Ros who greeted me with one of her famous fresh home baked GF loaf's of bread.
Kalimna- my home for the next 6 nights was much more than I had expected. From the roaring log fire that warmed the cabin on a chilly Winter's afternoon to the full gourmet kitchen facilities, the outdoor (2nd) fully enclosed throne with perspex walls and outdoor (2nd) shower.
I pleasantly surprised at the book and games library & Yeranda's little black book that contained everything from snake, leech & tick bite first aid, to local attractions and walks of interest in the surrounding areas.
I spent my days unwinding in the numerous hiking trails that meander across the vast property, being serenaded by the Kooka's and black cockatoo's and entertained by the red crested finches and the exquisite Lyrebird's.
As I said-
Shhh this is a secret and I am reluctant to share it! Unless you are one who can totally switch OFF and truly fall in love and appreciate this little piece of heaven.

I have been staying at Yeranda properties at least three times a year since 1998.Have stayed at Kalimna Pindari and Noonameena with friends and family at various times.Have seen all seasons heat cold drought flooding rains.Winter is my favourite time Pindari my favourite cottage.Ros and Kev are perfect hosts Ros for her bread and Kev for the big logs he brings for the outside fire and an occasional bottle of home brew but mostly for their friendly nature and unflagging enthusiasm for the lifestyle they have chosen. My youngest son was married at Kalimna and we have just celebrated my 70th birthday at Noonameena. All the family tell me the outdoor showers are great but my choice is the loo outside at Pindari have had some wonderful bird sightings from there.

Ah, ha...so when you are staying that is where Kev disappears to with a bottle of brew!!! I thought he was just sourcing extra back logs for the outside fire for you! It has always been a pleasure to have you, your friends and family stay and especially to host the Sneakaway Bush Wedding for Mark and Yulia. Hard to believe so many years have slipped by but your return visits are always appreciated. Small business is tough every where so to have loyal guests such as yourselves makes us realise how lucky we really are.

Ros & Kev are the most welcoming hosts you could possibly ask for. We have been going to Yeranda for 5 Years now and have stayed in every cottage. Each time we stay is more rewarding than the other. Pindari is our favourite and you can't beat it for the ultimate bush experience. No phone, no Tv, just peace disturbed occasionally by one of the many bird varieties that call Yeranda home or the odd Koala, goanna or wallaby. Each cottage is completely separate from the other enabling the utmost privacy. The outdoor showers and loo's are a treat and a part of the whole Yeranda experience. Ros & Kev have thought of everything to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Even winter is beautiful there with open campfires to sit by. Once you go there, you won't to come home. There is so much to see and do In Dungog that you won't be bored. Plenty of long peaceful walks, Ros might even take you on on herself. Beautiful things to photograph or paint, particularly recommended for bird watchers. The perfect place for a short break or long stay.. Want a sneak away wedding? Ros can help you with your arrangements as this is part of a service they offer. You don't to look any further for the perfect holiday!

My partner, Steve, and I, have stayed at Yeranda close to a dozen times over the past decade or so and it is one of our favourite places to spend a few days. We've stayed in each of the three cabins but our preference is Pindari, which sits perched on a bit of a hill with stunning views through the trees up into the mountains. What do we like? The seclusion and serenity; Opportunities to see wildlife - red necked wallabies, goannas, huge range of birds; Going for walks through the bush; Sleeping in on a drizzly wet morning; Feeling exhilarated standing under the outdoor shower under a star-filled sky; The smell of the eucalpyt forest on a hot sunny day; Sharing this wonderful place with friends with a glass of wine and a great meal.
Ros and Kev have created a wonderful retreat that goes a very long way to minimise environmental impacts and maximise benefits of tourism to the local community. They are perfect hosts who are always willing to share their huge knowledge of the flora and fauna and give you tips as to the best place to go to see a particular bird if that's what you want, but who are never intrusive. The three cabins are positioned away from each other so that you can achieve that sense of splendid isolation if that's what you are looking for.
So, if you are after a low key few days where you just want to relax, go for bushwalks, read a book, spend time with your kids redicovering the wonders of nature, then this place is for you.
Dungog is only 20 minutes down the road as well and is an interesting country town with a couple of great cafes and interesting bric a brac shops to sample if you want a slight change of pace.
In a word - perfect.

Thanks for such kind words...it is always nice to welcome guests who enjoy similar interests and environmental ideals as ourselves. To share a property such as Yeranda has to have been one of the most satisfying parts of this tourism chapter in our lives. Had we not opted to build our three cottages and had just "lived" here it would not have been half as rewarding...having others walk our bush tracks and sit by the creek and be comfortable in our cottages (be it by an outside camp fire or under those low key outdoors showers) is such a pleasure. Thanks for your contribution to this wonderful journey!

Touring in Australia we would tell people that we were going to spend time in Barrington Tops. Puzzled, knowing that we were from the states, they asked, why there? We were looking for a quiet get away that was close to nature. We wanted to meet some local folk and observe some of Australia’s natural habitats off the beaten path. That is exactly what we found at Yeranda. Our hosts were well knowledge in the local wildlife. The cabins were a great get away for our family. We enjoyed the trails right from our cabin and simply sitting on the deck watching; birds, wallabies and goannas while sipping our coffee. Highlight was the outdoor shower! The one thing that stood out about Yeranda was the attention to detail. These unique cottages were well thought out and it was apparent time was spent on the aesthetically pleasing detail of the construction. Our host was very accommodating especially for our 1.5 year old daughter. We hope to someday go back and spend time with our new friends at Yeranda.
