“Train nutters' paradise”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

Love staying in the old train carriages at Carriageways, at about $95 we think its great value. They are looking a little tired since our first visit several years ago, but we still love it. Plenty of space. The galley has sufficient gear, but there is only microwave or frypan for cooking. We always use the outdoor fire BBQ, even on a cold night sitting at the big picnic table is a fun way to supp. Meanwhile the livestock graze over the fence and trains trundle by on the mainline. Reckon it would be great with family as in addition to the queen bed in a separate compartment, there are two sets of double bunks. In living area are table and chairs for 6 as well as armchairs and couch. The cathode ray TV could do with an upgrade. Two reverse cycle a/c provide climate control. Bathroom has electric radiator. No luxurious spa but heaps of atmosphere. Short drive into Dungog for supplies or to the Barringtops Nat Park. Jo was great as manager. Only thing missing was the clickety-clack of wheels on rail.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and for such nice comments about your Carriageway experience. After receiving your review, we brought forward the phasing of some upgrades to the carriages (including the change to flat screen digital tv). “Flyer” is our first carriage to have just completed it’s mini make-over and we would be delighted to hear your comments when you visit us next. Happy travels.
Regards
Jacqueline

We have dined at this restaurant on a number of occasions(at least 5 times) and have always found the food and service to be exceptional. It consists of a set 6 course menu with a complimentary bottle of wine for $49 per head. The menu changes every couple of months, so every time we return there is always something different on the menu.

This restaurant is actually a restored railway carriage and is attached to Carriageway Crooks Park. Whilst we have not stayed there (we live locally) the accommodation always receives excellent reviews.

This is an overall enjoyable restaurant experience with great tasting food, friendly professional service and great atmosphere.

My husband and I stayed at Carriageways last weekend. We had stayed there a few years ago and Jo the manager actually remembered us. She has such a friendly demeanour, she is such an asset to the business. We stayed in one of the spa suites which has everything you could need in it. The meal on Saturday night was scrumptious. It was lovely to wake up to the sound s of the birds and the cows.We have been telling all of our friends about it.We will definately be going back. The dinner bed and breakfast package is such good value.

I went to the Gateway last night for a 40th birthday. Was a great night but for 40 dollars per person I expected a little more with the food. It tasted great but portion size is a bit lacking. Everything else was fine.

Thank you for leaving feedback on Carriageway Crooks Park and while there is a slight difference in the name of the property on the review, we would like to respond in assumption that you visited Carriageway Crooks Park and Rattler’s Restaurant. Rattler’s menu items are constantly reviewed and we are always grateful for customer comments such as yours to help us tailor and improve our menus going forward. We are pleased that the balance of your experience was enjoyable and we do hope to see you at Carriageway again.

On our adventure to Australia a friend suggested that we visit Dungog, which is about 2 ½ hours north of Sydney. I found Carriageway Crooks Park on TripAdvisor and sent an email requesting availability. Jo Anne quickly responded and we were offered a spa suite. Dungog is off the beaten path, but is worth the visit because of the stay at Carriageway.

Carriageway Crooks Park is a family owned estate that is a very unique property. There are four restored Red Rattler Train Carriages that are perfect for a family, three spa suites for that romantic getaway, a few cottages and the historic Homestead with five bedrooms and a private swimming pool. All of this lodging options are situated on a beautiful rolling hills estate that is tied together with a railroad theme.

My honey and I stayed in a private spa suite that included a full kitchen and comfy bed. We even had a flat screen TV and DVD player if the scenery was not enough entertainment. Jo Anne offered us some farm fresh eggs and we bought some local produce for our veggie omelets. The tranquility of the property is spectacular as was the view of the rolling hills from our suite. We fell asleep to the sounds of the wild and woke to the quiet sounds of a local train that passed near to the property.

Finally, the four train cars were occupied by four families that annually gather for a week in paradise.

We conducted our Annual "Conference" up there over a couple of nights. Some of us had the Spa Suites, others took the Carriages. Four star I would say. Very warm and cosy rooms - quite spacious. Meal was good too (although not strictly a "Degustation Menu"). The cooked breakfasts were huge, and good value. Jo (the Receptionist) could not have been more helpful. Well done !!

Room Tip: They are all good

This was our second visit to Carriageway since 2007, this time with an overseas visitor -as it's such fun to sleep in an old red-rattler train carriage! Especially with the authentic sound accompaniment of trains regularly passing through the Carriageway property, which also offers cottages, spa lodges, and a huge homestead. A timetable is provided for serious train-spotters, and there's a little railway bridge for those who enjoy trains passing beneath their feet.

This time we stayed in the end carriage (3601) - for privacy and wonderful views, this is the top pick. That said, privacy was not really an issue - we had the entire complex to ourselves as it was a weekday stay. Restaurant was closed (only open on weekends) and reception is also often closed or only open a few hours daily during the week. Although an active reception would have been appreciated to find where the barbeque tools were hidden (we managed with kitchen tongs and wooden spoon ;) on the plus side we were offered as late a check-out as we preferred, with keys dropped into a box.

On both our stays we found the carriages (Flyer and 3601) surprisingly roomy and comfortable. With the 'shotgun design,' access to the bathroom (shower, basin and toilet together, complete with big red steering wheel) is through the second bedroom (or bunkroom) which may cause inconvenience - we found the tiptoe method and not flushing during the middle of the night the best solution. The kitchens are basic, with a small fridge, microwave and frypan only for cooking, and minimal cupboard space so not much room for own food supplies.

Surprisingly, the small individual barbeques outside each of the four carriages are wood fired (with thoughts of bush fire hazard), but the food - excellent T-bone steaks from the local supermarket in Dungog - tasted wonderful. Boy Scout skills were needed to get it going and after the paper was used up, we found the dry bark in the paddock a wonderful alternative and a great additional flavour. The kookaburras laughed, the parrot flocks swarmed in the trees, the cows mooed; had we been totally unsuccessful, we had been offered use of the big gas barbeque by the pool (although there were no bbq tools here, either) or we could have phoned bubbly manager Jo, but we enjoyed the challenge of improvisation!

Our visit in 2007 was shortly after a major refurbishment and spit-n-polish occasioned by the grand opening of the historical Homestead, and although our 2010 stay was delightful with many of the newly planted shrubs now fully grown, it did seem that maintenance, cleaning and reception presence was low priority due perhaps to only occasional guests during weekdays and the impact of the gfc and downturn in both tourism/corporate conferences since 2007.

That said, it's still such fun to sleep in an old train carriage - and the birdlife, views and tranquillity remain unchanged and stunning.
