Shakespeares's is a stereotypical college hangout. Great food at not too much expense. This is one pizza place where the large pizzas are still actually large. Some may think its a little expensive but you DO get what you pay for.

The pizza really is that good. This was our first time to Columbia and my friend told me that it was a requirement that I go here for pizza. I was not disappointed. It really was some of the best pizza I have ever had. I was disappointed that I had not brought a cooler to take the leftovers home in. The place had great ambiance and the area is also kind of a fun trendy area to check out. There are some neat shops nearby. They weren't the fastest place in the world because the line was long, but worth the wait.

Tasty pizza, friendly staff, and a fun atmosphere. If you attend Mizzou or have a child here, you must try this place at least once. Can be pricey, but one must experience the tradition.

Since I'll be working at the University of Missouri this fall, it makes sense to see what's around campus. Coming from the Iowa City area, Pagliai's is the 'pizza to beat' in every sense of the word. They're an institution - things change very slowly, which is good, since the pizza has stayed consistent all these years. I grew up on this stuff! So when I see that Shakespeare's is the #2 place in Columbia, and it's that close to campus, it NEEDS to be seen.
People are right - it's noisy. But it's a place walking distance from campus, so you'll be getting a lot of student foot traffic. When we came in, school was not in session, so most people there were just locals. It has a nice, hip vibe, with cute comments on their pizzas on the paddleboards suspended from the ceiling. Old signs are everywhere, as well as the requisite Mizzou Tigers stuff. Ordering is easy - wait in line, order what you want, pay, get your cups (and/or beer) and sit. You'll have to pick it up when they call for you over the speakers. It's a large place with a bar, and there's outdoor seating. Cute fact - they have large orange towels that you get in lieu of napkins (which are also there), so you can be a complete slob and no one will really care!
As for the pie - it's good. Quite good. Once again, it's a style that is all its own, but it does bear a striking resemblance to a pizza joint miles (and I do mean MILES) away. The only place I've had pizza like this was in St.Thomas, USVI, a joint called Pizza Amore. (I liked it so much I bought the t-shirt! :P ) What the two places have in common is the way they place the ingredients - a thin layer of tangy tomato sauce, cheese, and then pile on enough stuff that you really have to hunt for the cheese. Pagliai's, in contrast, puts on enough toppings to get melded into the cheese. It makes for an easier slice to control, but it's just a preference. Both are equally good.
We ordered their special, but substituted green olives for the normal black. It's a very good pie - the ingredients are fresh, the flavor is tangy, and we ate it all.
New to think about - it IS expensive. If you plan on getting a medium pizza, be prepared to spend $15-20, where a large can run up to $30 plus. But if you have a lot of friends, you should be able to make it work.
It also has a HUGE advantage over Pagliai's - it's open for lunch, whereas Iowa City peeps have to wait 'til 4.
Shakespeare's will be a regular haunt. It's a nice intro to the area, and well worth a visit.

Shakespeare's pizza is a Columbia tradition, and it lives up to the legend. Best pizza in the State of Missouri--still just as good as it was when I was a student 35 years ago. If there is a line, stand in it and be patient. It's worth the wait.
